gazanias???

Southlake, TX(Zone 8a)

Fellow Texas Gardeners -

I have a question. My DH is from CA and he loves gazanias. I sprouted from seed last spring and they bloomed well over summer. But guess what??? After more than one freeze, they are not only still going, but blooming like crazy! Are they cold hardy? I thought they were annuals.

Does anyone else grow these? Could I use them as ground cover for year round color?

i have grown gazanias for the last two years. some of them have made it throught the winter, even have some still blooming. there are a lot of "annuals" that seem to come back in our mild winter weather. i have had Gerber Daisies, Mexican Heather and several others return.

thanks, We can winter over mex heathers if we cut them back and mulch heavily. I will keep an eye on the gazanias. I got some pink ones at HD and excitec about those possibly staying a while.

My gazanias actually look better the last few weeks than they did most of the summer. I'm surprised at them blooming through our erratic weather. Maybe they are as confused as we are...

Same here, HD pinks, found them for a quarter each and bought all they had. Doing and blooming better then in the summer. I also had some from seed and they are not as big or blooming, but still alive.

I have had gerber daises come back for the last two years, but haven't tried the gazanias. We had some pretty cold weather this winter, so I may lose the gerbers.

I planted gazanias last spring and they did fine all summer long and overwintered too. They are blooming right now. I've grown them in the past and sometimes they overwinter, but there's been years that I've lost them too. We've not had any freezes this winter and temp's have only been in the 30's a few times this winter. I have seen them classified as a perrenial at least in my zone 9B. I also had them reseed and show up in different parts of the flower bed this year.

I've noticed some small seedlings from the gazanias spring up. It will be interesting to see how they do. Usually when things self seed for me they are stronger(probably because they are in sites better suited to them than where I planted the parent plants)
