Is this an american robin?

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

if yes, is American robin same as Christmas robin? I was recently lamenting about not having many birds in my garden and lo & behold I notice this birdie convention hanging on the power line.

thanks for your help

They move so fast, this is the best of many pics I tried to take, and not that good.

first of all and again, thanks for your help everyone. No wonder birds don't visit my garden, they figured I know squat about them! lol

when I was googling birds in houston, I saw a pic of one named Christmas Robin. It looked similar to my pic so I just took a stab at it. I have no earthly clue what a Christmas robin is.

Hi voss, what might be the Christmas Robin is the Robin as found in Europe, it's a very small bird with a red breast. This has been traditionally used on Xmas cards, but I don't know how it relates to what you found. Take a look at all the Robins listed here, the American Robin was named after the 'Robin' here as it has a reddish breast, but is a bigger bird in the same family as Blackbirds and Thrushes. The name European Robin is not used here obviously.

It's the likeness in the Bluebirds with a pinkish buff breast and blue wings which makes me think it could be our Robin, the Robin also has a little blue but mostly brown wings which the female Bluebird has too. Unless of course they were talking about a bird you have there, which the Robin is not.

A google for Christmas Robin,

hiya wallaby. Thanks for the explanation. I'm glad to read that thinking it was a robin wasn't so far fetched. You learn something every day. I have already posted my pics in the birdfiles, my first ever! lol

Great that you are learning about birds voss, they are amazing and I'm sure now that this has whetted your appetite you will be watching and taking their pics more. You will soon be snapping everything that flies, it's addictive! :)

The European blackbird is a thrush, the American one is not. American robins are also thrushes as you say.

Wow those two ' robins' are sure different.

Probably named here by homesick settlers. After all they were not going to cross the Atlantic again.

According to the little blurb I read that is exactly what happened!

Stafford County, VA

Yes. Eastern bluebirds.
Your first picture shows a male flanked by two females. The second picture is a female.
