Hi, I was wondering if anyone has had success growing this from seed? I've wanted to grow this vine and wasn't sure if I should buy the plant or start from seed.
Of course, my first choice would be to save money and grow from seed.
Pls let me know your experience with this seed.
thanks
Maureen
Has anyone grown Vigna Caracalla (fragrant) from seed?
I have the snail vines from seeds. They are doing well, the only problem I have is the vine likes to travel a long way. I love the flowers.

Hello Maureen!
I have started Vigna Caracalla from seed and had good results. I find carefully knicking the seeds and soaking over night before you plant them helps a lot. The next day they will look swollen. :) I hope that helps!
Sincerely,
Vanessa
Thanks Sunshinesw and Acacius. I'm looking forward to growing these (first I have to get the seedsS:-)
I've grown it from seed also and agree with Vanessa about nicking and soaking the seed overnight.
Dorothy, that is a lovely pic. I wish I could smell it:-) I can't wait, I have seeds coming to me soon.
phughes, glad to hear you had success and I will nick and soak.
tks
You will love it the first time you start seeing blooms. And the smell is heavenly. Also if you ever see ants on it, don't kill em. That is the way it pollinates and you'll get a seed pod or seed pods. My first one actually bloomed the first year and I got one whole seed pod--guess there just weren't enough ants to supply more pods. It was a good thing I got some seeds though cause I lost my first one over winter and grew another from the three seeds that I got out of the pod. I have learned to reduce water during the winter months. I think that is why I lost my first one--too much watering. So far, I have one overwintering in the ground and am hoping it will make it through since winter in my zone should be coming to an end in late February. *keeping fingers crossed*
Good luck!
Thanks for posting that question Maureen, I was just about to sow my seeds and wondering the same question. I've heard so much about this plant I can't wait.
My thanks to y'all as well. I have seeds and now I know what to do with the things.
Good thing to know about the ants too. Maybe this will give them something to do besides invade the kitchen. Crunchy honey just does not get it. lol
I started some from seed last winter and one of the vines bloomed this year! Of course, I'm in Zone 8b with a long growing season, but the wait is well worth it. love, julie
Do start them from seeds, it is so much more fun. I agree with the nicking part too, it does help. I had blooms the first year and I forgot to get the pods, (how dumb was that?) Anyway I kept mine in a pot and had it vine up my old antennae pole outside. When the first frost was due I cut the vine to six inches above the soil line and brought it inside. Now I have it vining all over my other plants and up my curtains. Maybe I'll get lucky and it will bloom inside before spring hits. If that happens and I get seeds I'll let you know.
How cool is that! A blooming vine inside. That's my kind of home. Good luck to you and I hope you get buckets of seeds.
I hope so to. I need to find a way to move it so it is in more direct sun light. I will figure it out.
A sledgehammer makes for a quick skylight. lol What about a floor lamp with a full-spectrum bulb?
I have something like that now and it looks a little scrawny, but it keeps growing and reaching for the sunny window.
Hmmmm, a skylight might work.
