Opening e-mail attachments

This has to do with the fact that when I get an e-mail from a friend that has .gif I can not open it. It says go to folder options on the control panel which I did and put in the gif but now don't know how to designate something to open these files. Or do I need to just ignore these. They are from a trusted friend and I get them a lot so I am sure they are safe.
