This picture is of a cutting that includes a branch (or is it a "Y"?).
Should I expect this cutting to bloom this year?
Thanks,
Jerry
Where is the Blooming "Y"
Jerry, it's a branch. "Y"s have two identical branches side by side. How soon it blooms depends on whether the cutting came from above or below the "Y". Given plenty of water and fertilizer once spring gets here, even those from below the "Y" have an excellent chance of blooming this year. I hedge because some cultivars need to get up to 6' or 7' before they produce their first "Y" and bloom. Most will bloom at least once by fall. I've had rooted cuttings from above the "Y" produce a bloom or two that are bigger than the plant.
I haven't forgotten about the Audrey Hepburn, but the small cuttings died. When I was out covering my mother plant today I noticed a green shoot around the base. It is too small and green to send right now. By March or late February, ithe stem should be mature enough to cut. :-)
Not to worry, Veronica. As you can probably tell from the pics, thankfully, I have enough cuttings to plant a forest.
Sorry to read about your calving experiences. I had an uncle who ranched over at McDade. One of his sayings with regard to calving was, "you do the best you can and sometimes it is still not enough". Don't dwell on your loses, but build on your successes.
Take care of business first. Only a rancher or farmer can appreciate another rancher or farmer.
