Share what's still blooming before the big freeze!

That frigid Alaskan air is on its way. In my part of Houston, we've been lucky so far with only two light freezes that didn't kill a thing. Thought y'all might want to join me in sharing your pretties before they get zapped.

This pipevine is still blooming but the flowers are about half the size that they were in the summer. If it gets down into the 20s by the end of the week, they'll be brown and crunchy soon enough!

Turk's cap is so pretty this time of year, but mine always freezes. I wonder if I should try covering it?

My abutilons have never frozen, but maybe I've just been lucky. I heard 20s by Thursday but not whether it was upper or lower 20s. If it's lower 20s, I might try covering my abutilons. Some of them are too big though.

This one is one of my favorites, Canary Bird.

Here's some bromeliads getting ready to bloom. I'll have to yank them early next week before the arctic front blows in!

Wow! Those are gorgeous. Last year, I accidentally left a bromiliad out in a big freeze and it didn't freeze. It was kind of in a protected area though. It's so hard to know whether you need to move stuff or not!

I have a repeat blooming iris that is up long before my daffs in the spring. Guess it is going to get wilted this week.

I also have this plant I have been meaning to id. Anyone know? It was blooming in November and is blooming again in January!

Here is the pic from November.

Sheila...that sure is a pretty iris! I think your mystery plant is a pot marigold.

I have some phlox coming into bloom, but the upcoming freeze will only slow it down for now.

That is a possibility, I just know I didn't plant it. However I have spread seeds in that area from others and packets of mixed wild flowers last year. It went through two or three freezes so far and it doesn't seem to have effected it. Thanks

Sheila, love the iris and your mystery flower! Lots of things have seeded themselves in my garden -- night-blooming jasmine, pink rain lilies, four o'clocks! I love them. I think it's b/c I feed the birds and they bring seeds from all over, but who knows!

Beautiful phlox Carol.

I just looked at another forecast that completely contradicts what the weather guy said last night. This forecast said that it won't even get down to freezing. I hope it's right!

"wunderground.com" is just giving what I consider a normal January forecast for Dallas. High from 50-65 and lows in around 30-35. I must have missed the dower warnings.

I like that forcast a lot better.

My neighbor was saying today that it's going to get into the 30's here, but when I went to NOAA, they said only 49 tonight and tomorrow night and for the next 7 days after that in the low 60's at night. I wonder if I'm missing something? It was 80 today and dropped to 60 in 30 minutes!

Beautiful blooms everyone. I love the phlox and their fragrance... very pretty. I will agree on the pot marigold or Calendula ID. It does not seem to mind the cold weather. I have a pot of it and when a freeze is forecast, I just spread pinestraw or leaves on the plant.

Putting my faith in Wunderground too. It seems to be closest to our actual weather here.

The Osmanthus fragrans is in bloom, not showy blooms but fragrant. Sweet Olive...

Of course the Narcissus are all in bloom.

I want to share this one again... trailing rosemary. Delicate and pretty.

You're making my heart race...... hahahahaha

LouC ~ do you have any of your beautiful plants sharing blooms right now or have they all gone dormant? Mine are meager but I enjoy them all the more.

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

This is the earliest ever for me to find these flowering quince in blooms!!! Speaking of freeze, it's forecasted to be in the mid teens next week! What's with the wicked weather this year? Is yours similiar in the big State? I'm thinking of migrating further South. lol.

Everything seems to be amiss this year. Some birds that I have never seen here at all and others that are two months or more early.

In the green house I have Abutilon blooming it's little heart out. Everything outside has been frozen over and over and has finally decided to go dormant even with the every other day of hot/cold.

I'm soooo ready for spring and it is only January. Bought seed potatoes today.
First time it is decent I will plant them.

I DON'T LIKE COLD WEATHER!!!!! Sorry to shout.

Christi, I'm with you. I DON'T LIKE WINTER EITHER!!! There! lol.

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

You are a sweetheart.

Rockport, TX(Zone 9a)

This might freeze tonight, but it's not going to be as cold as I originally heard! I hope! Seems pretty darn cold out there and the sun is still up!

Pentas are looking spent anyway, but I do hate it when they turn all brown.

These impatiens made through last winter. We'll see. The ferns might keep them warm!

BTW Podster, I'm totally with you on the sweet olive and rosemary! Mine are blooming too and they are so wonderful! I couldn't get a good pic of either one.

I've never grown Donkey Ears before but I understand that they die after blooming. I've taken about four of the babies and rooted them, so I'm not protecting this plant tonight. I really liked this plant though.

The begonias are full of new growth. I just hate it when they freeze. It's supposed to be 31 tonight. It was 31 the other night and they didn't freeze. Still, I don't know how long it's going to be below freezing. I should go look that up.

Stay warm everybody!

Beautiful Angels! Here my daffs all got confused, and they're blooming now, before the big freeze. Open fields were cover with frosts. These daffs didn't seem to mind the cold. Other bulbs are sprouting except Tulips still hidden.

I just love those! I bet they'll be OK. Daffodils were my favorite as a kid. Now I have so many favorites!

I looked it up and there might be as many as 6 hrs at 31 degrees. I'm not liking that one bit! It's barely below freezing but 6 hrs is a long time and what if they're wrong and it gets colder. I'm worried!

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

Wow! Daffodils already! Mine are just budding and I am looking forward to them!

What pretty Donkey Ear blooms. I was just given a tiny plant in trade and hadn't heard of it before. If I were you, I would snag some cuttings from the begonias and start rooting them in water. Also save some starts from the Donkey Ears. Very pretty plants everyone!
