systemic fertilizer

Vero Beach, FL

I bought Bayers systemic fertilizer and it says on the container not to use on potted plants,i called them and the woman didn't know why!!!!!! does anyone use it on potted plants ?

New Orleans, LA(Zone 9a)

I've had serious problems with leaf rollers with cannas. One year, I decided to grow them in pots to see if that helped. When it didn't help, it was suggested that I use one of the Bayer systemic fertilizers. Even in the pot, it worked great. Now that my cannas are back in the ground I still use it. But it did work OK in the pot. I don't know what the difference would be.

Thank you for answering.I have leaf rollers on my fruit trees, and thats new to me as i have lived in Florida for 6 years i came from Washington state and Florida has different bugs here.I have a problem with one of my Brug starts something is eating holes in the leaves and i went over it today and can't find anything i even dug into the drain holes and nothing.I think it comes out at night in Washington i could always find a slug or snail in the drain holes. Any sugestions?

Pat, will you be using it on the Brug or the fruit tree? Systemics shouldn't be used on edibles! Is the Bayers systemic you bought the one with or without fertilizer?

I've used the 2 in 1 (with the fertilizer) on my potted Brugs before with great results, but a word of caution. Make sure the soil has been well watered before you apply it because the fertilizer is so strong it can burn the roots if the soil is too dry. Water again after you apply the systemic. I've used the recommended dosage only on Brugs in very large pots. All others got a greatly reduced dosage because of the potential of root burn. Brugs in gallon cans got only a few grains of the stuff.

Bayers has another systemic, a once a year liquid meant for ornamental trees and shrubs. That one doesn't have fertilizer and can safely be used on potted plants even those in gallon cans. Directions on the label tell you how much to use on potted plants.

You could have a caterpillar hiding in the soil. One of my new cuttings lost its lower leaves to some creature I could never find during the day. What ever it was has moved on because the new growth is hole free so far.

Thank you bettydee ,i would use it on brugs and plumeria,my brugs are in a 3gal but need to put up further. Where did you buy the once a year systemic,i live close to home depot and lowes. Can the once a year systemic be used on brugs and plumeria?

La Grange, TX(Zone 8b)

I bought mine at Home Depot, but Lowe's probably has it too. It's called 12 Month Tree & Shrub and comes in a blue plastic container. It can be used on Brugs. There's an older thread about its use on Brugs. I haven't used it on my plumerias, but it should be OK to used on them if they are growing actively. I've used the 2 in 1 on my plummies in the spring. My plumerias are going into dormancy now or are already dormant so I try to be careful about keeping the soil almost dry.

Hi bettydee ,i found Bayers website and sent them an e-mail and they sent a reply today. They said ....there are two types of Bayer,"Bayer Advanced tree and shrub 12 month systemic" , and for me to use" Bayer Advanced tree and shrub Protect and feed" I'll check tomorrow and if they have it i'll read the label.

the 12 month feed aspect .. is a nice snack.. but both brugs and plumeria would care to dine on something with a bit more zip to it.. on a regular basis... in addition..

Home depot had the "protect and feed" i'm going to email Bayer tomorrow about the fertilizer,it doesn't sound right .It would be nice to fertilize once a year, but i would like to eat more than once a year,so i'll check with them.

I have tried the Bayer Advanced tree and shrub Protect and feed on plants in the ground - canna, ensete, hibiscus. It did protect for 12 months. I'm not certain about the fertilizer part. After a few months, I continued to fertilized on my regular schedule.
