This plant always looks scruffy and sits on top of small boulders or other infertile places. From the remains of the flower I am guessing that it is an Aroid. It is also an epiphyte, I suppose, as it has no terrestrial roots. The flower is red/orange but I cannot remember the colour of the sheath. In the past they have been completely ignored
Any ideas?
An Aroid or not?
Looks like an Anthurium to me. Maybe hookerii?
Thank you for the lead. I have matched it in the Guatemalan Flora.
Anthurium crassinervium.
Found in the Peten and epiphytic on rocks. The red "flowers" that I remembered were in fact red berries.
Popular as a House Plant in the USA..
The leaves funnel the rainwater down to the roots, naturally taking all the fallen debris with it. This is why I called it scruffy and it is sometimes called Bird's Nest.
All these plants are in my woods (I should call it jungle but don't have any monkeys) except one and this is on a rock propping up a dead tree trunk in the cultivated garden. I have often thought of giving it a "Spring Clean" but now realise that I should not as the debris keeps the roots moist.
