Saving Seed

Ligonier, PA(Zone 6a)

I am thinking of buying some hybrid seeds. If I save the seeds from the grown plant will they come back close to the taste of the hybrid?

Nope.
Hybrids are a cross between two true-breeding strains...what you will get from the saved seeds would be anybody's guess but probably closer to one of the original parents.

I know with citrus it works so I was hoping veggies were the same way.

Really? Hm, that's interesting, wonder what's up with that... :)

Depends, most modern hybrids are from in-bred lines, so you may notice very little difference. Bigger chance is losing some disease resistance that you may need. Old hybrids will seperate as they were a crossbreed between two often dissimilar cultivars. Even then you will get get a percentage of hybrid and the two parents.

Oh OK, that makes sense. :)

Thanks farmerdill. I have heard of this before but I wasn't sure if it related to vegetables to.

Pam I know on all of my perennials and shrubs I find it is best to just propagate from cuttings. It's almost the sure way to get a clone of the mother plant. Although I have come up with some strange sports doing it this way.

Thank you both for your help.

I saved seeds from a few hybrid peppers last year and am curious to see how they turn out this coming Spring.

CajuninKy please let us know the results. I am really curious. I am ordering a bunch of hybrid seeds and would like to save some money next year by saving the seeds off of the parent plant.
I am trying some False Jalapenos seeds I save from last year so I will see how they turn out.
Thanks
