I have 1 bantam hen and 3 pullets. My hen started laying again and one of the pullets has been laying intermittenly. Now she has decided she wants to set. I had a bit of a set to with her this morning to get the eggs. Then she hopped right back up on the golf ball I leave in the nest. The problem is, I don't want anymore bantams before I have some heavier layers. So, I am going to get some large stock eggs from a friend and put them under her. I think she can cover no more than 6 so I'll try that.
Broody Hen
Oh boy! She sure is persistant. I got my first broody girl yesterday. She was sitting last night hen I ent out to get my injured girl out and today she was still there at 2:30 in the afternoon. I stole her eggs though. She puffed up big but did not try to kill me. phewww!
So what kind of eggs are you putting under there? I am not up on all the breeds. I have barnyard specials. (showgirls in the bator) just because they are cute.
Good luck
I think my friend has the usuals like RIR, White Rock, Dominiques, ect. I'm not looking for any fancy show chickens. I just want some larger eggs. I have some McCrea Roundheads for show but my roo died so I have to hunt up another one. They are not too easy to get your hands on.
I have never heard of it!!! Neat! You learn something new everyday. Do the Barred rocks lay big eggs or just the white rocks?
I don't know. I'm sure somebody else here does. Seems like they know just about anything you need.
Thats true. I have learned so much here.
Big eggs. If they're happy...
but arent the BR slower to start to lay? 6-8 months old.
I got the eggs from my friend yesterday. I only got 5 because I thought that was all she could cover well. The eggs I got are all brown so they are either Dommers or RIR. She took right to them when I put them in the nest. Today, the older hen (her Mom) wanted to lay in the nest the pullet is setting on so the old hen hopped up on the nest box and started pecking her daughter in the head until she got up. I went into the pen to put an end to that. When I got in there, they were both out of the nest so I took the bantam egg out that had been added to the nest. I think the setting hen layed it. I don't think the older hen had laid yet because her eggs are always dirty. I did pick a small egg out of the other nest box so I think one of my other two pullets is laying now. Whoo Hooo!
WOW, all sorts of good stuff going on there! Congrats. Did she set in another box away from mean mom?
