Look at this for all the seed starters

(Zone 7b)

I found this on the photo forum believe it or not.

I thought as some here were talking about planting seeds and wanting greenhouses. This isn't a green house but it will get your seeds started and isn't that expensive.

I am using the pvc pipes to make plant shelves

Wren i just thought this was such a good idea but i forgot to add a pic when i posted. I found if you don't add i pic to a new thread alot of time it's skipped over.

Thats a nice plant shelf you have made ^_^

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

Thank you I still working on finding the best shelving for the plants to set on. I used 1 1/2 piping with this one but I am going to try the one inch. I found all kinds of pvc joints at the web site.

I love it. And we use pvc all the time. I'd need to get lights though. And space!

Elbridge, NY(Zone 5a)

Do those lights take a lot of energy?

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

I do not think so.

Elbridge, NY(Zone 5a)

I run a 250 watt heat bulb all winter for my chickens. I was just curious.
Thanks.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

These are grow lights and do not produce a lot of heat.

Elbridge, NY(Zone 5a)

I see. I have never used them before. My DH works at green a greenhouse and will take my seedling there for me. Last year they were on my table and the dog knocked them all on the floor and broke most of them. SOOOO.....They wont be on my table this year. I would love to have a green house of my own. Maybe next year. :)

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

My greenhouse(shade house) is built using 2 inc pvc pipes, the roof is the fiberglass panel which could be use as walls also but down here the hot days out number the cold so I use plastic in the winter and will use shade cloth in summer. Here is a picture of it before I put up the plastic.

Hey there Sewingcircle: I have 5 of those florescent lights in my wood shop and they are on probable five hours a day with one on 24/7 and they run me around 16bucks a month. Just thought I'd let you know. Haystack

Elbridge, NY(Zone 5a)

Thanks! I was thinking about getting one of those rolling green houses (until I am talented enough to build one like Wrens!) That is a great idea Wren! How is the 80 degree weather? We have a weather advisory for ice and freezing rain. ;P
16.00 isnt that much. Its worth it if I could grow some starter plants! I can a lot so I use a lot of tomato and pepper plants among others. I just might try that PVC site one! Its kinda neat!
Thanks everyone.

That's wild Harmony! I built that like 3 years ago and used it for brugs and all my cuttings.. Now I have a few cuttings on one shelf.. but also 3 bators and a hatcher! LOL I took the lights down, except for some coleus cuttings on the top shelf. I have used it sooo much! I LOVE it... It has paid for itself 10 times over!

I was just thinking I need to look up the parts list and make one for the bators so I can put the lights back up and get seeds goin..

I have 8 shop lights with florescent lights.. there was a long discussion about grow lights vs. regular.. one warm, one cool fluorescent.. gives the plants full spectrum.
I can't tell on my electric bill when I run my lights.. just doesn't make enough difference.

Here is a pic at the other house.. just got it done.

Now it's in the wash room area at this house.

Sew it is easy. All you need beside the pvc pipe and joins is The cutter or a hack saw-go with the pvc cutter unless you are doing the 2 inch pipe, a measuring tape and a marking pen. For the green house a power drill and screws or glue. Use the 3 way corner and 4 way corner connectors and you will need less cutting. For the green house you need the Cross and the T connectors. And think box- make one side a little shorter than the other to make a slope.

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

I used the cutter.. there are a LOT of cuts.. the saw would take forever.. I am so glad I got the cutter.. I use it a lot..
I make mini tractors that fit over the plastic totes for the chicks in the house with pvc also.. then I can take them outside for "mini" outings to introduce them to the outdoors world gradually..

I spray painted this one green.. just cause I didn't like the pvc look.. LOL

Oh ZZ, that cool! I am needing a brooder soon.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

The cutter will not work for 2 in or 1 1/2 in pipe. My next plant stand will be out of the heavier 1 inch pipe!!!!!!!!

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

Yeah.. I used 1" and that's about all the cutter can handle..

For a brooder.. be sure to use paper towels or something first.. not shavings till they are eating and drinking well... they will eat shavings and it has no nutrition, and they will be too full to eat food.. and could starve.

I just use several layers of paper towels.. (way too many layers) so you can just roll up a few layers at a time when you need to clean, rather than remove them from the warmth and redo the entire floor.. I sprinkle a tiny bit of feed around.. and make sure they have a tiny water.. that is not too deep, especially for the first day or so. I use a red spice jar lid.. I put marbles in to keep them from drowning... they fall asleep with their beak in the water sometimes! Then I introduce the red screw on waterer for quail.. it's narrow and they can't get their head in it..

I have eggs goin in the hatcher Friday!

Elbridge, NY(Zone 5a)

Sounds good. I have canning jar lids for water for the first couple days, then I have the ones for chicks. I will take up stock in Bounty also. hehehe
What kind of eggs do you have going in the bator??? yeah!!!
My second batch is due on my bday!!! yeah!!!! (If they live)

(Zone 7b)

I personally really want to build one of these i start seeds and they get all leggy and die.
Maybe this would stop all that at least i hope so it would be a good cold weather project.
Now if i can just get it done or better find the time to do it.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

Just fix the lights so that they can be adjusted up and down.

Elbridge, NY(Zone 5a)

To prevent leggy plants I bury them up to the leaves once. I dont know if thats what you mean.
I would like to have one too.

(Zone 7b)

No it's actually the seeds never been handy with starting seeds. I get all wantin to plant seeds they come up real well but then just get all long and look like bean sprouts you see in the store.
Then they just die :( i think it's lack of light so if i built that they would have all the light they need. (I guess)

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

Yes it sounds like lack of light. You do not need to build the whole thing at once. just do half of it and then add the rest later. that is what I am doing with my plant shelves in my green house
Here is a section that I added to the two shelf section to make it a 3 shelf unit.

Wren i have the Will i just got to find a Way to do it. LOL

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

I under stand. Can the plan to fit your needs. Say start with 2 pvc pipe and 4 of the corner joints and 1 four tube light. That is all you need to start with. You can do it.

Kingman, AZ(Zone 7a)

Ok I am cornfused... are we talking Coops or Greenhouses??? or a combo of both???

Elbridge, NY(Zone 5a)

We have a green house, a brooder and lighted plant stands. hehehe
So I guess both. The multi prpose of PVC pipe. Its amazing. Able to leap tall buildings...

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

I have a green/shade house and plant stands make out of PVC pipes.
