What kind of kiln?!

What potting I learned was done in Japan with a mad old potter who used a gas kiln --reduction or not, clean or not depending on his mood. Here it seems the preference is almost entirely for electric. So I'm curious what all you 'Mudslingers' out there use? I'd love to be able to just build me a kiln and go, but... really have no idea what is available and how it may be used. And I'm well away from any area where I could take classes easily...
