My neigbors are out of town and went to feed the dogsna d chickens and turkeys today. had plenty of dogfood but no chicken or turkey food.
I don't expect them back for another day or two and know them birds can't go withotu food that long. They penned.
Bot sure what the corner store has, but can drive to town to feed store to get them a little bit of food, if somebody can tell me what kind and the cheapest to get to hold them .
need to leave shortly, so would apprciate any help real quick.
need immediate help Please somebody
Laying pellets if they are pullets and older. If they are chicks under 4 months old then chick starter.
Our chickens are almost 2 years old. We use "layer mash" from the feed store. It's 15% protein. I believe it's a 50 pound bag for about $8.50. I'm not sure about the turkeys.
Not sure what these are. They are bigger all i know , two roosters and two bigger girl ones and the tukeys there arethree and they bigger males and females. No baby birds.
Don't think they have laid any eggs yet, cuz they don't have no nestign boxes. Always thought chickens had to have nexstign boxes but can be wrong.
My turkeys eat what the chickens do. I do add sunflower seeds tho. Star is just looking for something to get them by for a couple days. If it is just 4-8 birds maybe if you have some veggies you could give them.
My chickens lay wherever they feel like it! Sometimes I find eggs in the daylilies. LOL
Was their other food like ground corn or more like whole corn or pellets? Mine like the ground up stuff. The pellets are supposed to be cleaner and cause less waste but my chickens don't like them. They also don't care for the stuff with the whole kernels so we buy the mash-looks like ground corn.
I'd say if they are fully feathered and look full grown, you'd be safe with the layer formula.
If the owners normally buy at the feed store, they may be able to tell you exactly what they buy. Our feed store knows my hubby by name.
Good idea Badseed, ask at the feed store.
Nope no veggies, but thanks for that info for the next time I in a pinch. : )
ready to head to store, so wil look for layer mash or layign pellets. Keep yoru fingers crossed for me. Oh and one more thing.
can I just toss the food in through the big cage on the ground? Not sure with the way they got the door rigged ifI cna get it open and closed again cuz the dogs run free aroudn the chicken cage and dont want them getting in andgettign the birds, but don't want to make birds sick if puttign food on groudn will do that
If I walk into feed store, they got some young kid workign there whohave the time dont know nothing, so dont trust him to tell me. I know ya all grow birds and yoru advice betetr than any bored store clerk .
have no ide a what they been feed, it looe dliekcorn and a bunch of other stuff , he said it was somethign expensive and my budget no prepared for expensive chicken food. Can oick up a fe wvegies at store next dootoo though if they liek that for a treat.
Appreciate all th ehelp.
They probably feed them a special mix from the mill or feed store.
Al the corner store had was somethign called chicken scracth. gave em a bunch of that. not sure how much they all eat.
What I don't udnerstand is ya gonan have birds and want them to lay eggs or to eat, why not from the start build and do things right. They done had these birds for age snow and not the first egg.
he finally put a coupel piece s of wood in so they have somethign to fly on at night. Hate when I see animla s not beign treate dright even they do eventually end up on the table. Folks stil gonan eat them and ya dont want to be eatign sick birds.
I better shut up since I hjave no idea how to raise r take care of them, but sure do appreciate ya all lendign me a hand. Can't stand to see an animals hugnry no matter what kind it is.
It's very nice of you to take care of them. You'd think they would have made sure to leave you enough food to care for them while they were gone.
So far as I know, it can take 17-30 weeks for the hens to start laying. After that, you can usually get an egg every other day. Some can give an egg a day.
I think a lot of people just get a handful of birds for the fresh eggs. I think most start off with good intentions or see chicks somewhere and fall into the "cute little chick" syndrome. Then you either have to care for them or not. I'd say they are a fair amount of work but not so bad as a huge critter. They do need clean food and water daily and clean housing as well as protection from other critters.
Our birds will eat most anything. They love bread and often get heels/ends or scraps. It's hysterical to see them eat spaghetti. We try not to overdue the table scraps though. They are thrilled when we have an abundance of vegetables! I had to keep them out of the veggie garden last year because they love tomatoes!
Bad.. Thanks, I have some tomatoes here and have spagetti. What other kind of veggie s can they eat. Almost got some collards at store but looked ta them big leave s and wasn't sure what to do with them or if they could eat greens.
star...you could give them some dog food or wild bird seed...when my chickens were free range they would come up on the porch and eat out of my dog food bowl...
chickens will eat anything but a tin can...lol...they are scavengers of the highest order...any leftovers from your fridge will do...the stuff you would throw out anyway...old hotdogs, old lunch meat, any old veggies or fruit...
i forgot to add stale chips, crackers or bread
LOL. I bet that looked cute Virgin. Thanks, if thes efolsk don't get back soon and run out of this stuff at least I know got dogfood to hodl them cuz we gona get some bad storms and weather and I dont drive in it. Which is why they may be late comign back too.
if u r on a budget and they r not ur birds and they will be back in a couple of days what u did is plenty. the scratch grain is fine alone for a short period of time. as long as that is not their full diet year round a few days will not hurt them. figure 1 full cup of scratch per day per bird to put out for them. chickens will eat about anything but some things r not good for them.
if u want to put extras out watermelon, cantaloupes, apple chunks, cut up grapes anything like that will pretty much work. letuce type no iceberg most any other lettuce is usueally fine. dog or cat food, tunna fish in a can, usually table scraps but i don't feed mine that.
My chickens' all time fav is Kit-n-Caboodle cat food---you should see 'em fight the cats for a nibble...
lmbo, poor kitties.
lol!
Usually we help 'em out before the hens get too outta control...funny though.
We've seen wild turkeys intimidating a neighbor's cat. So I can envision it well!!
Wow. Learnign lot sof things abotu chickens.
I took the top and botto part of my tomatoe form my sandwhich and threw it out there to them. Good grief the noise and what ya call it struting like around all tryign to get some of it.
Scare dme. I just stayed back and let the have fun. : )
I told ya they love tomatoes. LOL I don't know if it's the tomato itself or the red color but they sure get crazy for tomatoes.
In an emergency, a person can feed some corn meal, regular wild bird seed, and oatmeal.
I feed my chickens cooked rice, cooked oatmeal, add some vege's from the freezer, mix all of this up and let it cool. I then dump in some wild bird seed that has sunflower seed in it. Sunflower seed isn't the greatest food to use, but it will work in an emergency.
Then feed it to the chickens. And stand back because they love it.
copper
Feed them cooked spaghetti and then stand back and watch the race.
With or without sauce??
Depends if you prefer the birds with or without orange stripes. LOL
hahahahah and don't forget them rollign meatballs. I gotta have meatbals on my spagettii.
LOL! Thats funny! The song "On top of Spaghetti...all covered with Cheese"...
comes to mind. I guess with out would be better now that I have that orange ring around the beak pic in my head!!!
lol just to funny
