Hi, everyone. I usually post over in the Roses forum and lurk on the mid-south and iris forums. Our family is trying to locate a kitten or young cat to become the newest member of our family. Since we have a lot of long-time cat owners over in Roses, I posted there first. Here's a link to that thread:

I've been frequenting the shelter sites and Petfinder.com, but it seems that every kitten that speaks to us through photos is already adopted by the time I get a response from the shelter. There are some listed far from me that I haven't even written about because I know it would be too far to travel to pick up the kitten. I was hoping perhaps y'all could give me some advice of alternative places to look or strategies for adopting the right kitten for our family.
We're a family that is outdoor-oriented on weekends, with a 15-year-old Sheltie and a 4-month-old Australian shepherd. Our daughter is married and lives in another town, and our son is a college student who visits home frequently. I'm a retired teacher, so I'm home a good part of the day. I also spend some time each day visiting my mother-in-law at her Alzheimer's facility. I would like to find a gentle kitten that travels well and could visit MIL with me (she previously had many cats and dogs and is very happy when I bring along a furry friend to visit). I also am active with our church and have some responsibilities with my own parents, who also live in town... but for the most part I'm home. Obviously, I also need to find a kitten who would be happy in a home with dogs. In the Roses forum, discussion led us to Colorpoint Siamese or Turkish Van as possible good choices for the main breed. I have no experience with either of these breeds, as our previous beloved cats were both tabbies that adopted us (showing up as adults on our doorstep). They were both with us through old age; we lost the last one about two years ago.
Do y'all have any other suggestions regarding breed... and do you have any advice on how I could go about searching that would actually lead me to an available kitten? I'd appreciate any help you can give!
Ev =)
