Anyone grow Cestrum elegans in the Carolinas?

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

Seems to be a bunch of Cestrum, evergreen, ever blooming, cold hardy and part shade tolerant. Hmmm. Anyone know much about these plants??? Just spotted those and they seem interesting to me.

Confused myself with the Latin. I didn't realize there was so many of them and what was related to what.

Going to have to do some research before I ask any other questions. http://i27.tinypic.com/2jz3ab.gif

I grow Cestrum nocturnum here (in the ground) Core, and it comes back reliably from the roots every year. The fragrance is incredible! I secretly planted one shrub a couple of years ago probably 40' off the driveway. My wife walks the dogs down the driveway every night for their constitutional and one night she came back and said ''there's something that smells heavenly out there and I can't find where it's coming from". I knew right away what it was, so I showed her where the fragrance was coming from. I got authorization on the spot to propogate "as many as I want" (a first!). I made 6 cuttings last fall, and all are currently BLOOMING in the GH (none bigger than 2'!). Cestrum nocturnum likes it here. Don't know about the other Cestrum's, but I'll probably find out...

I found these last Fall and planted three along my back fence line. They're still green, which I was hoping for. Although, the colder temps are still ahead. We'll see!

Don't give up on them if they die back to the ground Beach Barbie---my C. nocturnum's do every year. But by early fall, they're 6'-8' tall and flowering like crazy. So far, they've always come back from the roots.

I just got one from Woodleys - it was on the 75% off table with a note on the pot that said "Caution: Not frost tolerant". Since it had been outside over these past few nights they would not sell it to me (even at 75% off) so they gave me one.
I have it inside (gal. pot) and will plant it later.
Who knows? It night come back!

Core, your question doesn't have to be perfect before you ask it. No one would post anything if we all waited for perfection!

The Cestrum I'm lusting for is the orange one called 'Orange Peel'. Both Cestrum parqui and Cestrum 'Orange Peel' are hardy in zones 7 and 8 according to Plant Delights.

pyromomma, we must be fairly close if you shop at Woodley's, although you mentioned your soil was clay, right?

It's winter time so I'm out looking around the internet for whatever may catch my eye. Some times I'll ask something that I answer myself a few minutes later.

Oh.

By the way, is it cold in Bluffton? Although I grew up outside Washington, DC, I told my husband this morning Columbia was as close to Alaska as I cared to live.

Yesterday I decided to imitate Florida orange growers and water some plants. Even though it was in the afternoon and the sun was shining, the shrubs turned to ice while the water was still spraying. A pretty sight, though. Would have snapped some photos this morning but it was just too cold!

Didn't get that cold here, looks like I bottomed out at 28 degrees. The cold was for longer over night so it sapped my tropical hibiscus, gingers etc. So far the buds haven't fallen off my fruit trees. The lemon is the closet to flowering and I'm not sure what will happen.

BTW As soon as I saw the fruit trees starting to do something I watered them well and fretilized. We'll have to see what happens next week, I'm not real sure what to do.

I have a Cestrum parqui in the back yard that seems to be very hardy. It's gotten down to 23F here and it still has leaves, although it did stop blooming. It blooms and blooms and blooms.

That's what I'm looking for. If it stops bloming for a little while I'm fine with it but I don't like things that turn into sticks every winter.

This what you have? http://www.plantdelights.com/Catalog/Current/Detail/04794.html

Yes, that is the plant I have.
