I don't know why I'm convinced that it is an Acorn Woodpecker since this is the only picture that I got and it doesn't show much. He kept going back to the broken branch above him where it looked like he was feeding a nest, but now I think he was inserting nuts into it. I may, however, have shaped my memory to fit the description of the woodpecker!
What do you think? FYI, I took this pic in southern California near the coast.
