First Indoor Hibiscus Bloom!

Sterling, VA(Zone 7a)

Just had to share this lovely 8-inch wide hibiscus bloom -- the first bloom ever since I starting growing them indoors (purchased first plant around the end of August after viewing all the lovely hibiscus photos from this web site!!

Let me introduce Fantasy Charm. It's cold here in VA this time of the year, but the grow lights and the warm-mist vaporizer seems to do the trick--I tried to simulate a tropical environment as best I could. Snug

Gorgeous! I can't wait until I have flowers...or just plants with leaves for that matter (mine are just germinating)

I've been seeing Hibiscus in various box stores and they have blooms no where near that size. Is this a different type of plant or is it just because the plants are small??

Some of the flowers on the hybrids get to be pretty large. You generally do not find these plants at the box stores; they have to be obtained from a grower. This is an old photo of Tarentella with a 10" flower.

I know that there are many different types of hibiscus plants that vary in height, bloom-size and even leaf texture--some are hardy and can be grown outside up north, and some are tropical. They are all so unique! and beautiful!! --and they attract humans and well as hummingbirds, plus!!

These links provide more expert info on hibiscus characteristics, and may provide more in-depth info:

Emmentoo, the same variety Fantasy charm you can get from Tried and True hibiscus in Englewood florida, they have a website and they have great looking plants. My wife and I drove down there this past year and they are a very nice couple, he said it was a hobby that kind of got out of control. They have over 800 different varieties. Their web site is triedandtruehibiscus.com and you email him with your order and they respond rather promptly.
