Will this bird feeder work?

Mysore, India(Zone 10a)

I made a crude looking bird feeder using a wooden frame and wire mesh to hold the grains. I've hung it there as you can see in the picture. When I'm home I walk around that area doing this and that in the garden otherwise there is no human movement. I've put in some peanuts, rice grains and some roasted gram to begin with. I understand that birds take their time to analyze and find out its safety. Have I done things right?

If you want to succeed at birdfeeding it is best to find out the names and feeding requirements of birds common in your area. Ask someone who has a feeder near you. She/he should be able to suggest the best feed mix to attract your particular species of common birds. Birds are not all the same. They have different eating preferences from species to species. Some will eat fruit, while others were evolved to eat grains, others to eat insects, etc. Some eat a wide variety of stuff. Knowing your local birds is the best way to start.

The internet has lots of birding onfo. Search for birds common in your area , then search what these common birds eat. Put the right feed in your feeder and be patient.

Why so high up Dinu?

I think you should lower it to a height that is easy for you to refill and easy to take pictures of the birds.

Thanks for the info. I had a pipe ready that length and so I put it up as it was. Also, I had read somewhere that it should be so located that it keeps the birds safe from the prowling cat. There is one or two cats on the prowl in the premises, though not our own. Last month, a newspaper feature carried a person's bird-feeding expertise here in Mysore. I now have to locate that paper to see if any info is given there. I also know a famous bird watcher here. May be I've to look for them now. How about the location of it?

Location is good, if song birds feel the need for protection you have the trees and such near by for them.

Okay, I also wanted it to be exposed to the sky so that the birds will have a full view to spot it. I think I should keep the bird bath there beneath it. I hope that will be fine too. What do you think?

http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/769520/ I've a thread here showing some of the birds that visit our home.

I'm also thinking of bringing in a bird bath beneath this feeder, hoping they will spot it faster.
