Schefflera, Umbrella Tree, Octopus Tree (Schefflera actinophylla)

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

Hi Geoff,

There's been a suggestion that the tree in the photo is Schefflera pueckleri, with the single silver trunk and the way the leaflets don't droop but are held up slightly.

What do you think?

It's possible I suppose, but from I have been reading, the two are very difficult to tell apart... reportedly the pueck tree has darker leaves, more prominent veings, and flowers in most climates in which is survives, while actinophylla only blooms in the warmest, frost free climates and flowers are showy and red. So I am unsure where this tree should go as photos on the web of both species match this one. But actinophylla is a much more common tree from what I understand.

So, do you think we should leave the photo where it is, or move it?

I would leave it... now that I recall, the freeze two years ago would not have touched this had it been a Schefflera pueckleri... and it got mostly defoliated... so it's probably a more tropical species, such as actinophylla

Thanks Geoff!
