Gainesville FL isn't a place you would normally expect to see a whole lot of bromeliads planted out in, but, I have found its totally doable here if you pay attention to just a few things which were pointed out to me by members of the local brom society...
One, picking hardier plants, LOL
Two, where you plant
Three, being ready to throw a blanket on if it gets much below about 27F (although some I never, EVER cover, they have been at 22F without damage!)
I have had all the plants in the following photos in my yard for going on 7 years. Some are progeny of plants that are planted in other places in the yard, pups were divided off and replanted in new locales.
I like the look of broms in the yard and have all sorts...Ananas, neoregelia, aechmea, nidularium, billbergia, and xerics like Dyckia, Hechtia, Puya and Deuterocohnia
This is a somewhat hard to find xeric called Deuterocohnia brevispicata. It grew in a container outdoors for years. I finally got tired of it poking me when I needed to move it so I planted it out. It has a spread of about 2 ft and the spines are WICKED
Landscape broms in my yard
Also looking good, I didn't cover several in our last freeze and they are looking great, I think some are hardier than we give them gredit for. A neighbor has a large clump that she never does anything to . I keep hoping to see her to ask for er some :)
A couple of good ones for pretty much anywhere in FL are those big Porteas that get the pink blooms (but they too have absolutely wicked spines), The "fingernail" Neoregelias (Neo spectabilis), variegated Ananas, Aechmea recurvata, Puya alpestris, Bromelia balanse (Heart of Fire) but watch where you plant them, they grow into huge thickets and have...you guessed it...wicked spines!
Here are a couple more photos of a few of mine
Keep em coming Goth! LOL
Do you have a shade house full also?
Yesh, I have tons of broms in the greenhouse, When they multiply too much, I divide them and move some outside into the yard. I am kind of like my own propagating nursery, LOL
Thanks gothqueen I have made a note of those. :)
