Suggestions where to Purchase Dwarf Fruit Trees

NE, SD(Zone 4b)

I am looking to purchase fruit trees to give as gifts. Our zone restricts us to the dwarf type.

Which variety (lemon, orange, pomegranate, lime, etc...) would you suggest and which vendor?

Thanks in advance for all suggestions/recommendations.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

Springhillnursery.com has dwarf lemon, dwarf naval orange and dwarf limes

Park Seeds has dwarf Dwarf Pomegranate dwarf lemon

just to name a couple

New Orleans, LA(Zone 9a)

Four Winds Growers at [HYPERLINK@www.fourwindsgrowers.com] is wonderful for all dwarf citrus plants. But that's all they sell.

Ditto on Four Winds. I'd buy nowhere else.

Thank you to all.
I did check DG Garden Watchdog on the above suggested companies.

I'm chiming in on Four Winds also. They aren't the cheapest, but have very nice trees, and healthy ones.

For trees I would get a Meyer Lemon (very prolific), Eureka Lemon (store type lemon), Key Lime, Bearrs Lime.
Another plant I would get is a Meiwa kumquat. If you like sweet fruit, this is the one for you. It is so yummy, it's just like candy! It is also quite prolific, it's nice to just walk by and grab a fruit and munch on it. These trees will give fruit year around.

Stan from McKenzie farms http://mckenzie-farms.com/interest.htm is a very respected grower. Unfortunately his website isn't very professional, and it's best to call and talk to him, but you can pay by credit card or paypal. I have a few plants from him and they're great, came in blossom and set fruit right away. I panicked because my first tree came by mail when the temps were in the 100s, but it was green and beautiful, and packed great.

I also bought a nice grapefruit from http://www.thompsoncitrus.com/, I picked my first grapefruit this week after buying a tree two years ago.

Watch where you buy plants from, though. It's illegal to buy or ship plants out of Florida.

There is a citrus disease called greening that is becoming a serious threat. As a result of this disease, you can no longer buy citrus plants from certain areas. This disease is a terrible, terrible threat to all citrus plants, it doesn't matter if you just grow them in your house or whatever. See the link below for info, including where you can and cannot buy and move citrus. I add this info because certain sellers on ebay are still selling plants, and unless you want the US government showing up to take your plants, I wouldn't buy from them!

I first got the citrus craze about 2 years ago, and have been buying all different sorts, lemons, limes, oranges, grapefruit, kumquats, mandarins, the works! But my recommendations are to stick with the lemons, limes and kumquats, for me they give the most usable fruit.
It might now be the same for everyone, but I've had a orange and mandarin (tangerine) tree for two years and never gotten any fruit. The grapefruit has 2 small fruit after 2 years, and I won't get another eatable fruit until next year.
That's why I would stick with the year-around fruiters.

Good luck, and welcome to the fruit lovers group. Buy some as presents and buy yourself one too!

Thanks for the info.
Due to our climate I think I have to purchase dwarf so they can be brought in during the winter. It looks like McKenzie Farms doesn't carry dwarf trees or did I overlook these?

saveourcitrus.org - - I didn't see which states I should buy from. I presume it is okay to purchase trees from the vendors listed in your email.

The citrus restrictions do not apply to you in MN. Only the citrus states of FL, CA & AZ. You can order from any professional retailer and ship to MN. I still vote for Four Winds - almost exclusively dwarf. http://www.fourwindsgrowers.com/

Argyle, TX(Zone 7b)

Texas Pecan Nursery, and Womack Nursery have good prices, but have not bought from them. Stark Bros is another option but don't waste your money on their "Supreme" package if you buy from them. I would suggest not getting too many different types of fruit trees or you will have to do several different different types of sprays and different timings.

The citrus restrictions most certainly do affect you in MN!
That is, as far as being allowed to buy citrus and have it shipped to MN. For example, you can't buy citrus trees from Florida and have them shipped out of state.
If you grow citrus from seed, you are OK to ship from MN to many states.
If you go to the saveourcitrus.org website, look along the right side at the "Quarantine information".
Then, click on the state for information. For example, Florida says:

Entire state is under quarantine for citrus greening disease and Asian citrus psyllids.
It is illegal to move live citrus plants, plant parts, budwood, or cuttings from Florida. (Note: Citrus fruit cannot be moved from Florida unless USDA has issued a limited permit.)

Most all reputable vendors should have their websites updated and not ship if they are in a quarantined state or county.
That is, if they are smart and don't want to lose their nursery license!

Stan at McKenzie does sell dwarf (also google grafted trees, it's the same thing).

I agree that Four Winds is great, I have a lot of their trees. If you have the money, I would recommend the two or three year old trees, they are more expensive, but ready to set fruit, and are less prone to trouble growing (in my opinion!)

Speak of the devil, Stan was on a PBS show, you can see it here:

http://www.scetv.org/television/productions/making_it_grow/streaming/index.cfm

He is on at about the 38 minute point so you might want to drag the slider bar over to that point if you don't want to watch the entire show.
