What kind of incubator should I get?

Wharton, TX(Zone 9a)

Any suggestion on a good incubator in the range of $150.00 or so. Looking to hatch about 2 to 3 dozen eggs.

I think Claire's got the biggest selection at home...maybe she'll post some ideas for you in the morning. I know there are many others who know but I'm not one of 'em...Luck!

I have the Hovabator-with force air that ya have to set the temps and humidity. There is a Hovabator that is preset with the correct tempsand force air..They hold up to 42 eggs w a auto egg turner inside..I think without it,it holds up to 50 eggs but you have to do all the turning of the eggs yourself..
I got mine at www.cutlersuppy.com

Ya, I am using a Havobator with circulated eggs. An egg turner would be nice though!!
Turning eggs can be hard, especailly if you are busy!!! Good luck Moodene!!
Claire would be a good one to share. Shes got skills! hehehe

I'm looking into getting the hovabator with the preset temp and the turner i've heard it's a very good incu.
I have right now a Top Hatch and it does fairly well and it comes with a turner and use a candalabra bulb for heat. I like everything about it but the thermostat which is tricky to work with but overall it's a good incu.
I was given the advice recently to put a cozy around mine to help keep the temp stable i'm going to try it. I will be setting eggs in about a week or so to test the cozy advice out.

The Top Hatch i got from Cutler supply and it's i believe $150 with shipping.

Great thread. My DH has been talking about getting an incubator instead of buying the chicks/ducklings.

Elbridge, NY(Zone 5a)

Oh yes, I agree. Check out the homemade incubator sticky too!

Wharton, TX(Zone 9a)

thank you all. I'll check into the Havobator. I think I would prefer the one with temp. control, forced hot air and a turner...yeaa baby! or rather baby chicks! I would not be too good at making my own, I'm afraid.

Elbridge, NY(Zone 5a)

My DH says no more eggs hatching after this. :( I will have 20 eggs in the bator)
Sad day for me. I just love thebumbling babies!
I still have to turn my by hand.

Incubator blankets. I am thinking of making one of these for my top hatch brower.

Oh thats nice. I need a square one as the hova I have is a big square. hehehe I do like the pattern!

(Tia) Norman, OK(Zone 7a)

square would not be any harder to do. I have to get some material for making pot holders and if the stuff is not to expensive I might use that inside the one I make for mine. If it is to expensive then I might just put double batting in. That is "another" project I have going. Actually I think the square would be easier. 4 panels.

Elbridge, NY(Zone 5a)

I agree. Square may be easier! I am not sure how much the insulation is. Quilted material would work I am sure. Its thinsulated. ;) I know what you mean about projects! Yikes! I have a lot of reading to do for theis geography class. 5 chapters today. Its like taking dramamine though. snore! LOL

(Tia) Norman, OK(Zone 7a)

LOL there is NO way I could go back to school at my age now. I DO NOT have the attention span I once had. I would sure be asleep at the Once Upon a Time.............

I have everything I need to make one with the exact fabric as in the picture except for the velcro, going to moms today she might have some. I might just make one today.

(Zone 7b)

OMG did that say $45 for a incu blanket GESH! even i can sew well enough to make one of those.

I bought 2 yards of flannel stuff like a they make cozys out of yesterday for $5 and i'm useing the draw string thing or maybe velcro now where did i put that.........The quilted was much higher it was $5 a yard and i figure if i double layer the material it will be enough insulation?

(Tia) Norman, OK(Zone 7a)

you got it Harmony, I was thinking of doing the draw sting also. Heck no i am not paying 45 bucks for that. I forgot to look for velcro at moms yesterday. My daughter told me something yesterday and I think I am still in shock. I will post on a new thread.
