look!

Chesapeake, VA(Zone 7b)

I'm not sure if I'm in the right place or not but I had to post this. I got these cuttings as a freebie. First time I've had these before. Lost the name too. Anyway, b/c of the time of year I've given it very little water and kept kinda cool. I went out to check on things and found the little thing with a bloom! I've only had the cuttings for a couple of months. Very pretty I think.

I do not know what it is but I like it and congratulation on the flower. If no one here can ID it try on the cactus and succulent forum. The others are epiphyllums and one CC.

Sandy the epi nut.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

Yes I really like that flower.

Chesapeake, VA(Zone 7b)

I think it is a rhipsalis?!? or an epi of some kind. I will have to go look back at my emails and stuff. So you would say it is not an epi right?

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

Epi covers a large area. But they are usually the ones with the flat leave/stems. I have baby orchid cactus that look like that but they will not flower until they are a lot bigger. Say another 5 to 6 years. Twitting thumbs in flustation(?) The wide ones in the pot are for sure epi's and the red one looks like a Chirstmas Cactus thought I have never seen one that red.

Lovely flower! Looks like a Rhipsalis to me also. Possibly this one? http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/116217/

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

How captivating these type of flowers are!!! Afraid I'm helplessly hooked!

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

I think I will look in to some of those. LOL

(Zone 1)

Rhipsalis are Epiphytic like the Orchid Cactus: http://www.rhipsalis.com/

Chesapeake, VA(Zone 7b)

I found the name. It is a rhipsalis pilocarpas. The red one on the right is a Christmas Cactus that has gotten way too much sun. The ones one the left are epi cuttings that I am trying to root. I sat the little pot on it so I could get a bitter pic of the rhipsalis. I was really surprised to see it boom so early.

Marks, MS(Zone 7b)

yes...it is rhipsalis pilocarpa. I have a bunch of different rhipsalis, including that one.

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

I also received cuttings of this little rhipsalis pilocarpa. I went out to check on plants that are hanging in the lychee tree and found that it was blooming. The flowers are tiny and dainty. I hope it fills out the pot eventually. Right now it's in a 2 1/2 " pot.

Very cool! I like the looks of that one, Eileen!

I have a couple of Rhip's, not sure of the ID's anymore as the label's have faded completely. The elliptica is the only one I remember the name of, and it's the only one blooming right now.

Anyone know if we have a Rhipsalis forum? Or would it just be combined with Cactus & Succulents? I know I posted pic's for ID when I first joined DG a couple of years ago and someone ID'd one or two of my Rhipsalis but I can't remember where I posted!

I just went and looked ... can't find Rhipsalis listed so I'm assuming it would be C & S forum.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

It could be either or both.

Shelburne Falls, MA(Zone 5a)

Hi! My Rhipsalis elliptica is starting to bloom, too, Lin. I'm surprised that it blooming in FL the same time as Mass. Guess it's about hours of daylight.

Boojum: I just figured it was the time of year for it to bloom. Mine stays outside year round .. it's hanging out on the pool deck and gets lots of sun.

Montgomery, TX(Zone 9a)

Anyone have a cutting of that Rhipsalis elliptica they would be willing to share?

Shelburne Falls, MA(Zone 5a)

I would if you can wait till spring-after May 31st to be safe. It's in the single digits here and you'd be sad to get a frozen cutting. Please remind me since I won't remember!!

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

you could send a dmail and then put it into a separate folder. That's what I am trying to do.

Shelburne Falls, MA(Zone 5a)

Brilliant idea!! Are you up for waiting Trouble??

Montgomery, TX(Zone 9a)

Yes, please put me on your waiting list. I would love to have a cutting.

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

My Rhipsalis elliptica is also blooming. Lin, this is a cutting that i received from you. I didn't think it would bloom so soon. Here's a picture of the whole plant.

And here is one branch that has the most flowers. I love these tiny flowers.

That's just too precious a bloom! Those many flowers all at once. My eliptica isn't reddish like those, why? because yours receive lot of sun shine? (Mine are new, and sitting under artificial light indoor this time in winter). Nor has it any flower yet. Young specimen? Any one knows how old does it get to become flowering age?

(Zone 1)

I have a smaller elliptica that came from a cutting from my "mom" plant and it's blooming too, so I don't think they have to necessarily be a particular age to bloom. I rooted the cutting this past summer. I keep my Rhipsalis on the dry side and they are very root bound but I don't know if that has anything to do with blooms either. My plants didn't get any red color until I moved them to full sun.

Marks, MS(Zone 7b)

they claim they need to be 3 yrs old to bloom, but I d not believe this. The plants being rootbound also helps them to bloom. Another factor that helps them to bloom is the change in temp. they like to be kept on the cool side in the winter.

(Zone 1)

I don't agree with that 3 year old idea for blooming either as the cutting I rooted last summer has really grown and is now blooming. Well, it is winter but we haven't seen any real cool temp's yet! We did have a couple of nights in November where it got into the 40's but by 8 a.m. it was warm again. We are supposed to have really, really cold weather here this next week. Lows in the mid 30's beginning tomorrow night and daytime high's only in the low 60's! BRRR ... that's too cold!

I took a picture a couple of hours ago of the small Rhipsalis elliptica that I rooted from a cutting this past summer. I don't think the blooms are visible but lots of little buds. I was amazed at how fast this thing grew ... but then again, here in the heat and humidity of Florida summers, some things seem to grow a few feet overnight!

I think it is gorgeous! I have one rhipsalis, but I haven't ever seen it bloom. I think I was told it was an easter cactus.
I love the pictures. Linda

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

I have a few other rhipsalis, ( goebeliana, cereuscula, prismatica and an Easter cactus) but they haven't bloomed for me. I have them longer than these two, the pilocarpa and eliptica. They are all hanging in same area (outside in the screened pool enclosure. I keep going out and checking on them every few days, hoping to see buds or flowers. They get their redish color from being in the sun. The cereuscula and prismatica are different. They have round segments and do not get the red color.
The one I'm waiting to bloom is the Rhip. pachyptera. I have it three years. This past year it has really grown. I think I'm going to put it in a hanging pot and put it in the sun too. Maybe that's what it needs.

It will like light but not direct sun.

Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

I'd love to have a cutting of the Rhipsalis elliptica also, if anyone is willing to share.

Sarah

Chesapeake, VA(Zone 7b)

Boy, I'm glad to see these pics. I didn't know they would blooms on the sides like that. I have one I need to check on when I get home.

Lin, boojum: where in the world did you find such huge beautiful plants?

Shelburne Falls, MA(Zone 5a)

A local florist-it was a deal too.

It sure is pretty.
I never can find anything like that around here.
Do you keep it outside in the summer & bring inside for winter?
What do you feed it?
Whatever you are doing it looks happy.

(Zone 1)

Mine is one of the Exotic Angel plants purchased at either Wal-Mart or Home Depot a few years ago. Lowe's carries the EA plants too but the prices are much higher. At WM and HD the baskets are @ $9.98 ... the same exact size at Lowes is $15.97. I hope come spring they have lots of good plants!
