I just ordered my first EarthBoxes

Johnson City, TN(Zone 6b)

Yippee! I had to tell someone!
I've read so many good things about these and although I have a couple of HEBs this makes me uber happy.
We are on a fixed income so I will have to get a couple a month. But I am so excited that I found this forum and all the good advice from everyone, [I resisted the urge to say y'all.]
Our last frost date is about the mid of April I am counting days and making plans. Devota

Congratulations on the EB's. Being a fixed income type myself, I have had to spread my gardening expenses out over a period of time also and over a period of time, the basic equipment and supplies start to accumulate and the next thing you know......you have more toys than you have time to play with. :) But what a great and usefull hobby it is and unlike many other hobbies, it even has potential of breaking even. Well.............maybe not..........but what the heck!

Thanks Jaywhacker. Gardening has always been my passion but after the chicks left the nest we downsized and moved to a nice little cottage that sits on a slab of red clay. I have to fill every hole I plant in with top soil and It is too much for me now. The containers and EBs are perfect! I ordered some coir from Bocabob so I won't have to lug any more big bags of potting mix. I am getting my life back. Yippee!

I had to wait over a year to get my first ones, last year. If your going to have to save precious dollars, what better than on something that give back..and brings joy as well. Cant wait to hear your stories

Thanks gardenglory. I will be gardening in an 8x10 space so it will be intense. We have heavy droughts in the mid to late summer. Right now I am setting up a rain barrel system to water the vegie garden. I will post pix as I go.

Devota,

um, South of the Mason-Dixon line, it IS "Ya'll".....

P.S. Welcome to the addictive world of Earthboxes! It's our drug of choice!

Yes, welcome, Devota, to the wonderful world of self-contained box gardens, and EBs in particular! Ask away if you have any questions! I also am on a fixed income and began slowly "collecting" my EBs two years ago. I now have a posse of 12 EBs--presently piled up under a tarp for the winter, but ready for action later in the Spring!!
I do envy Tplant's ability to have more than one EB planting season per year ;-)

Johnson City, TN(Zone 6b)

Tplant and CapeCod, thanks.I have been reading everything I can get my hands on so as to be ready for this new addiction. I do want to know from those of you that use coir, do you fertilze the EB the same way with it as you do with the potting mix? D in TN

Devota, there has been a lot of discussion about this on various threads of this particular forum--none of which I can locate right now ;-)
I know that bocabob has special "coir friendly" fertilizer for sale on the DG Marketplace. I think that he has used this with great success. Tplant can probably tell you a lot about this subject, too.

10-10-10 fertilizer is the standard along with dolomite lime. The coco coir,is beast and Jungle Growth, Miracle Gro, etc are also excellsnt potting mixes but never use potting soil.

Boca Raton, FL(Zone 10a)

Hi,

If you end up using Coco Coir in your EB as the growing medium and set up the EB the way it's supposed to be, I would use the 10-10-10 fertilizer and Espoma Garden Lime, as Tplant does.

well I am a sucker for a sure thing and the Earth Boxes sound like a sure thing. Question: can you start seeds in the boxes, then punch the holes or do you always have to start with plants?

Pembroke Pines, FL(Zone 10a)

Make an X and plant your seeds.

Boca Raton, FL(Zone 10a)

Hey Tplant

How you feeling?

Devota, congratulations! I love my one and only EB and I intend to buy at least 10 this growing season.

Johnson City, TN(Zone 6b)

Thanks Moonglow. This is such a great forum, meeting such good and interesting and curious gardeners like yourself. I suspect I will "seeya" around the place. Teehee. Devota

Bob -- Going for daily nebulizer treatments at this time and on a lot of meds but starting to feel much better but doctor's strict orders are for rest. If it weren't for you and the aid of the watering system my tomatos would be dead but my family and friends and of course myself, have been feasting on the best crop ever. The coir does make a big difference with my special mix of lime and 10-10-10. Only wish I could afford your fertilizer system and then I'll bet I'll be growing some monsters and eliminate the need for lime plus will have even more minerals then I now have and that makes for healthier plants to ward off disease.

Boca Raton, FL(Zone 10a)

Take it easy buddy. And someday you will have a water/nutrient system like mine.
