Sad news

Biggs, KY(Zone 6a)

I am sad to tell you that I lost my MaCrea Roundhead roo the Monday before Christmas. He did not show any signs of illness or distress. He was eating and drinking fine. Strutting around like only a big game cock can. When I checked on him just after dark to change his water, he was sitting in the bottom of his pen. It looked like he had just sat down, put his head on the ground and went to sleep. I was devastated. Me and DGS cried like babies. We called DH at work and cried over the phone. It was a very hard night. Charlie was such a beautiful rooster and he loved to be handled.

Oh, I am so sorry! It is hard to loose any of the flock! He sure was handsome.
Please know I am thinking of you. I wish there was more I could do.

So very sorry : (

Biggs, KY(Zone 6a)

Lots of people likely think I'm crazy for crying over my rooster but I love all my animals and what people think has never bothered me.

Elbridge, NY(Zone 5a)

Oh my, I dont think thats crazy at all. I cried all day when I lost a baby chick. It is sad. And you loosing such a dear roo is cause for tears! No one thinks that is crazy! {{HUGS!}}

Biggs, KY(Zone 6a)

I cry much more over animals than people. I think it is because the animals are innocents and don't leave garbage in their wakes.

Thank you all for your kind thoughts and words. It is a comfort.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

So sorry for your lose {{{{{HUGS}}}}}}}

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

I am so sorry too. I would cry too, and have. It sounds like you gave him a wonderful life... it also sounds like he didn't suffer. At least you can be thankful for that. He is so beautiful.. I bet it was fun to be around him!
We all understand the pain you are going through. I wish I could take some of it away for you.

Biggs, KY(Zone 6a)

People have the wrong idea about game fowl. They are not evil. All roosters will fight for territory, hens and dominence. The difference is that there the game cocks don't quit. You have to be responsible and keep them apart. They actually like people. But the roos will most definetly protect their hens. They are very interesting chickens and very beautiful.

I'm so sorry for your loss,Cajun He was a beautiful Roo. You're not crazy for crying; I do the same thing whenever we lose one of our animals. {{{HUGS}}}

Denton, TX(Zone 7a)

I understand, Cajun....and I am so sorry you lost the rooster.

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

So sorry to hear about your roo. Sounds like he was a very special bird. I know exactly how you feel having had my share of losses in the past few weeks, including my favorite hen, Rosie. It is so hard to explain to non-chicken people how upsetting this is.

Hastings, MI(Zone 5b)

thats so sorry to hear!
Why did he die so suddenly?

mid central, FL(Zone 9a)

you are not alone in your grieving over "unlikely" animals. i cried over a mashed gopher tortoise that someone had hit and left for dead. the little thing lived several days and i was in the process of transporting him to a rehab center when he died. when i called the center, i couldn't even get the words out. cry, cry and cry some more, i say. animals are usually far more worthy of our tears.......(((cajun)))

Denton, TX(Zone 7a)

Debi! That would have made me cry too!

mid central, FL(Zone 9a)

i know how much you love your turtles, melva.

Biggs, KY(Zone 6a)

I don't know what he died from. I'm wondering if he had enough grit. His craw was full but he was thin. He ate good. I'm going to give the girls some grit just to be on the safe side.

I always stop to help turtles cross the road. I hate it when they get killed. I have an eastern box turtle I call Hinge. She is growing nicely. I might release her this summer but I might not. She is still pretty small.

Wharton, TX(Zone 9a)

What a handsome and stately bird your Macrea was. So sorry that he died so suddenly. I would have been in shock and cried too.

Hello Newbies Welcome to the poultry forum ^_^

Hello Harmony.

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

Oh NO Claire! I haven't been reading that much, and just a quick check in here and there.. I'm so terribly sorry to hear about Rosie..

I went to close up tonight and couldn't find one of my Ameracaunas.. I searched everywhere with the flashlight.. I was in a full blown boo hoo I started to head for the house..and there she was.. wandering around by the coop door.. totally confused.. I grabbed her so fast, I might have squeezed her a little too hard and probably scared her with my crying..

Cajun, I sure can relate to your sadness. I told Catscan tonight I love my chickens too much! This is so hard sometimes!

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

Hi ZZ - yes, I was crushed about Rosie. She was my special girl. I lost all but 8 of this year's hatches, and then about 25 adult birds or more. It was making me crazy counting the bodies so I stopped.

But, we haven't lost a bird in 6 days now, and today I had 2 eggs, which are the first since we came back, and they both look normal, so I hope the worst is behind us.

Elbridge, NY(Zone 5a)

Oh that is great Claire. I am happy for you to have 6 days of no more loss!
I see a better year ahead of you my friend!!! {{{HUGS}}}}
(And you have a chicken fairy minion as well!!!)

Phoenix, AZ

You are a great person, Cajun. Your roo was really neat. I have two roosters in the middle of Phoenix. Love watching how they develop, and how they protect their flocks. So far, no complaints from the neighbors. Even when they start to crow at 5am!

Biggs, KY(Zone 6a)

I think I may have found out what happened to Charlie but I don't know what causes it. The man who gave him to me said it sounds like he was bound up in his craw. Apparently it happens to game fowl. He said the way to treat it is to use a syringe to put yogurt down their throats into their craws then to massage the craw gently and the yogurt will help to empty the craw. Have any of you ever had this happen to your chickens?

McCreas are hard to find so I am going to borrow a Hatch roo from my friend and raise some crosses. That particular cross is very popular. The hatch looks a lot like a McCrea so it should be a nice cross.

Clarkson, KY

Cajun, it's in one of the reference links somewhere. I don't recall a thread here with that discussion. Good to hear it's not a catching thing and that you have some crosses to look for...

Fredericktown, MO

I am so sorry to read about your roo.........I know how you feel.......We are chicken, dog and cat lovers here.........We have Gold Laced, Silver Laced and Blue Laced Red Wyandottes, Brahmas, Jersey Giants, Barred Rocks, Rhode Island Reds, Aracana's and Bantam Cochins..........They all have their own personalities and we love them all..

Cajun i was at the auction sat night and there was a slew of pretty Game Cocks and i thought of you^_^

Biggs, KY(Zone 6a)

Were you tempted by their strutting? They sure are pretty birds.

(Zone 7b)

I just think they are beautiful chickens period and they were in pairs in cages. I don't know how much they sold for we left kind of early but a guy bought one off the truck for $20.

Biggs, KY(Zone 6a)

That's cheap. My trio was $1500. They came from Hawaii.

Biggs, KY(Zone 6a)

Just got my borrowed roo delivered. He looks a lot likr Charlie but doesn't have Charlie's presence and is only half Charlie's size. I don't know if he has a name so I'll have to come up with one.

Here he is.

Elbridge, NY(Zone 5a)

Yes, he needs a name. His eyes are piercing.

Sapello, NM(Zone 5b)

Two buck chuck?
Chuck 'cause it's short for charlie... lol

Is this the same as sour crop we're talking about?

Biggs, KY(Zone 6a)

He's kinda sleek so mayhap I can call him slick. I'll think on it.

I don't know what they call the craw problem. I call it sad cause it took my Charlie.

Elbridge, NY(Zone 5a)

I agree, slick would be good.
I did not even know about Craw until now. :(
