Outlook Express ?

You all have been so helpful in the past to me a complete computer dummie. I've been leaving my Outlook Express on to quickly get my messages and sometimes it says error on page and has not downloaded the messages until I click send and receive. Not always but sometimes. How come? BTW this is when I walk away and leave the computer inactive for a while, again sometimes but not always.
