Out doing some overdue tending at the pond when I ran across these two orangy round things w/reddish spots laying on a leaf, partially submerged near the edge of the pond. I have no idea what they are but didn't want to disturb them if they are some sort of eggs??? They're about the size of a walnut or a kumquat. There are fish living in the pond but I cannot name them other than catfish and bass. I don't think there are any snakes that lay eggs in water??
I'm rather new to the pond and wondering if anyone here has seen such a thing at their pond or if someone can ID them. any imput is appreciated.
Do these things look familiar to anyone?
Kinda icky looking. I hope someone identifies them.
If they are attached to those leaves in the pic I think they may be an insects egg case. If you crack them open they are fleshy on the outside and are hollow. They will have a small white worm in them surrounded by a kind of spongy material. The tree actually produces them in response to the irritation the insect causes which in turn protects the developing bug. The leaves probably dropped off of the tree and into the pond.
Thank you for your insight tetleytuna. I will check into it further tomorrow and let you know what I find. LOL!
I don't know what they are. But it looks like they are spotted?
I used to find round spotted orangie looking thingies on our oak leaves back home when I was little. But if I remember right they were hollow.
there is a forum for trees.
I would post it there, or on the plant ID forum and see if anyone there knows what it is.
I suspect it could be from a tree. maybe as the others said a 'pest' product on a tree ha ha
They kinda look like buckeyes from an Oak tree. Any oaks near the pond?
Yes there are oaks near the pond and oak leaves in the pond! which I am trying to rake out! what a job! LOL. I took the oak leaf out of the pond and they were attached to it. so I cut one open and it does appear to have some sort of white wormy looking thing inside but mostly hollow as tetleytuna described.
They look kinda large to be insect galls which are the insect things attached to oak leaves. some sort of fungi perhaps?
