Don't underestimate hoyas!!

Mesa, AZ(Zone 9a)

The heat went out in the greenhouse on the 2nd coldest day of the year Saturday night (30 degrees)! I didn't know it was off until Sunday morning when I went to check on them, and everything was off. I think the heat was off most of the night. I also had several eriostemmas in there. After praying, I found out what happened. I had added another heater and it was too much for the circuit, so the fuse blew. I got it fixed and turned the heat on until I left for church, I figured it would make me feel better even if it did nothing for the hoyas. I emailed David Liddle and asked him if there was anything I could do, and he said to buy some seaweed fertilizer and spray the hoyas. He also sent me some interesting info on how seaweed fertilizer is good for helping plants survive freezing and drought. I sprayed the hoyas and so far everything looks great, my Retusa is still blooming as is a NOID. I don't see any damage to my eriostemmas. Don't underestimate hoyas!!

Awanda, I am so glad your Hoya's are okay! Wow, I would have never thought they could survive even a few hours at 30 degrees! I know you must have been frantic ... glad the prayers and DL's help came through!

I am real interested in the information DL sent you regarding seaweed fertilizer! I have used fish emulsion off and on for years but never tried seaweed fertilizer.

Lin send me an DG email with your email address and I'll send it to you.

Interesting. Is it available in the US? Is there an equivalent here in the US?...

(Zone 1)

oops ... I forgot to add the link yesterday! Thanks for posting it here Awanda. I too, would like to know where I can get this stuff or it's equivalent!

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Probably best to look it up on line and then find something to match the ingredients. I don't need it...but others would.

Awanda...do you know if David has used it....or just sent literature on it?

When googling Seasol, I found more info about it and also this post from another DG'er last spring: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/825012/

David said that he uses it. I purchased some seaweed fertilizer at my local nursery. It's not quite the same ingredients as Seasol, but it's the closest I could find. Mine has Norwegian kelp, but the rest of the ingredients are pretty much the same. The brand I purchased is by Growmore and it's called Seaweed Extract Liquied Organic Kelp. It states that it promotes plant growth and and vigerous root system. It only cost $6.99

Please take a lesson from someone who didn't know and used it as a fertilized exclusively. It was not the right thing to do. Seaweed Extract has a lot of salts...like fish fertilizer... Sounds good tho.

Yep, Lots of salt! Seaweed washes up on our beaches at certain times of the year and especially after a storm. It's fun to explore and see what shells, pieces of flotsam, sea critters etc. are entangled in it.

Seaweed, fish emulsion fertilizer ... lots of salt! Plants do seem to love it but not in excess. I use liquid fish emulsion at times and I think the stuff that I have out in the shed now says it has no odor but it smells Yucky to me, Really gross!
