Backyard Bird Count
Always good to have a reminder! I didn't participate in the Christmas Count, so I'm looking forward to the Backyard Count in february.
Yes, thanks, JsMom! I meant to do the Christmas count but just wasn't able to fit it in but I'm taking off work to do the GBBC.
I'm looking forward to this; I hope everyone participates!
It's free and you can do it in as little as 15 minutes or much longer depending on your free time.
The best thing for me was to be able to see the results. What birds have been seen where in my area. I definitely had fun last year. This year I have so many house sparrows that I'm wondering how I'll count them all. Maybe their numbers will dwindle by February!
The results are cool to look at when it's all done.
Last year I was amazed at the number of European Starlings in the final N.A. count.
It feel's good to see that you contributed to the data.
Yah. Also, I like to see how many contributors there were in my town. I also confirmed that the red-breasted nuthatch is around here somewhere!!!!!!
This will be my first year counting and boy it will be a great count. This morning we had a snow storm and there were so many birds out there. . There were 20 Chickadees,5 male cardinals, at least 15 titmouse,2 downy woodpeckers and a few birds I didnt know. This will be alot of fun come Febuary.
Christine
15 titmice! holy cow.
Mrs_Ed I know its amazing how many birds I have here. I couldnt even count the house finches & sparrows LOL
Christine
LOL.
STAY STILL!! Oh shoot, now I have to start all over again.
For those that have not read this, and a reminder to all
Christine
It might be easier to count the flocks of finches and sparrows if you take a picture and count them later.
Thanks jas!
Thanks for the reminder on the Backyard Bird Count! I had forgotten all about it until I saw your post.
We did do the Christmas Bird Count here and it was loads of fun. We filled our feeders with our choicest seed mixes and hunkered down at our picture windows with some hot toddies and had a ball one saturday morning with our holiday out of town visitors.
Wish we had someone coming into town next week!
Wow 15 Titmice is a lot ! I'm thrilled when I get 4 here.
Hard to count, usually 2 at a time on the feeder, but are they the same two? They need to carry little numbers.
ha ha.
Well you know, you only the most you see at one time. But the need to stop moving around!!!
I think I'm going to try and go to a few country locations and see what I can find this year.
I'm really looking forward to next weekends count. My feeders are very popular in the neighborhood :>) so I will have a nice count to post.
Christine
Just a friendly reminder :>) Happy counting everyone, tomorrow you can start if you like....
Christine
Thank you Christine!
BUMP
Yep...Doing It :-)
sent in information for Feb. 13 Luckily the local flock of turkeys paid a visit.
How is everybody doing?? Anyone getting something unusual??
I am hoping the sapsucker will stop by for one of my counts!! Just the usual suspects here.
just the usual birds although it was nice having the big turkey flock yesterday, Fewer birds all winter long except for the chickadees & titmice.
I sent in my count this morning and it was low compared to other days. Dont know where all my birds went but I guess they didnt want to be counted LOL
cardinals 5
chickadee 4
amer. goldfinch 8
blue jay 3
sparrow 1
titmouse 2
junco 7
downy woodpecker 1
hairy " 1
Had 1 unknown that I've never seen before.....
Christine
Your not counting tomorrow jm?
pelletory, I will try to count again tomorrow, but its a big day for me.....
DAYTONA 500 starts and I've been waiting 3 months for that, and I have to cook and be ready for the famous words
GENTLEMEN START YOUR ENGINES !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Christine
LOL,Okay Christine. :-)
I am still counting and hoping the Redpoll and Bewick's will show. So far a lot of American Goldfinches and very few of the less desirable birds. I think the raptors are buys today as the birds seem to be flying off all at once a lot more than usual. I did have a pair of Downys and Titmice show up!
Sent mine in for yesterday, not yet today but I had a Sharp Shinned Hawk!! More tomorrow
NOt getting much interesting at all at home. Some of the spots I thought would be hot spots are not. Just got back from a friends where I thought I'd see pheasant and quail, but didn't. I DID get a number of american Tree sparrows at the feeder.
I swear, every time I go into the field to shoot or spot, I am more and more impressed by Rose's collection of birds and her photography!
Ta Ta!
Today's weather is very dark but tomorrow it's supposed to be sunny so I'll head off to a local lake and see what I can find.
I just had 2 Red-tailed Hawks perching in a tree.
I dont get to see many hawks here, guess I'm not out at the right time.
Its great to read about all that your seeing this weekend
Christine
We had 150 Cedar Waxwings in our backyard this morning! They must have known that we were participating in the GBBC because they sat still until we finished counting ;o)
HOLY COW, that's Great Kim! geeze louise!
That's wonderful Kim!!
Cold here today with the wind but I spent some time out back.
Saw a Golden-crowned Kinglet!
We have lots of CWs this time of year until late April-early May, but rarely this many at one time!
Very nice pell, I would love to see one (even though they are here in AR), I only have Ruby-crowned.
