My Woodpeckers & other birds

Deering, NH(Zone 5a)

All during the summer and all the other seasons I have been watching my birds. I get the hummers, this past summer I had two sets of them. I had their feeder hanging off the porch which didn't seem to bother them. And I have my regular bird feeder along with suet feeder on a pole hanger to keep the squirrels off which is doing the trick. I get yellow and purple finches, blue jays, juncos, chickedees, morning doves, sometimes cardinals and my other favorite my red headed woodpeckers.

This one's a Yellow-bellied Sapsucker.

I didn't see any yellow on his belly. He's basically black and white with the red on his head.

Here's a page on them. You probably wouldn't notice too much yellow at that distance anyway.

Check your field guide, rhodiegirl, and you'll find that there is not much yellow on a Yellow-bellied's belly. (say that five time fast!) The same holds true for the Red-bellied Woodpecker but that's what they are, for some reason.

Red-headed on the other hand are more solid black and much more red on the head than in your picture there.

You beat me to it, Mrs. Ed. I was just about to send her a link to the Red-headed so she could make the comparison. In looking at the names of some birds, such as the Yellow-bellied, I've often wondered what the namer was thinking when he chose that name!

cuz it is fun to say!

My sibley's shows lots of yellow, but I've only ever seen a really faint yellow. *shrug*

I just know I like them. They make a really neat sound when they are around. When I hear it, all I have to do is look and see them. I've gotten pretty close up to them without chasing them away. I have one couple here.

Ha. I just listened to the sound on the cornell site. They sound like a dog's chew toy!!!

I haven't seen one of these for a couple of years. Long before I was taking pictures of birds. I'm ready for them to come now!!! You are lucky Rhodie!

Trust me, they are very sweet birds. It's fun just to watch them go from tree to tree.

Here is a picture of some of my birds grouped around the bird feeder.
