Surprise

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

I bought a large NOID epi just before I came up here to my sister's home in Ga. It was loaded with buds, many fell off but it had more that where close to blooming. What to do? So I cut off a piece with a couple of buds on it. That was on Monday, the stem hardened of and the leave started to thin out. so Christmas I placed the stem into a glass of water. As I am writing this the flower is opening. It is a lovely coral color.
I am taking pictures and when I get home and am on my own laptop I will post the pictures.

As you see it is setting in a glass of water so far so good. I think I will leave it in there to see what happens. I still need to learn how to use the flash

What a lovely flower. Another winner for Wren! I am so glad they are blooming for you.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

Thank you. I sweated it for the 7 days I was gone. the piece in the picture was cut off the plant and taken with me. 2 days ago I put it into a glass of water, so far it is happy. I think I will leave it in the water to see what happens.

It will probably root! :) Enjoy!

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

I was wondering if it would as they usually rot if you over water them. But this one was very dry and drained from the flower. when I put it into the water. So we will see.

Congrats Sandy!!! What lovely blooms! The pix (one before the last) is breath-taken! Wooohoooo! Happy New Year epi-Momma!

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

Happy New Year to all y'all too. Here is hoping for a lot of flowers and of course new epis for everyone.

Sandy, I know that stem cuttings will root in water. One of my neighbors started about 15 large cuttings in 5 gallon buckets of water and they bloomed the first year. I can attest to that as we exchanged cuttings this year. I don't know if leaf cuttings would work.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

Thanks for the info. What epi was it? I will let every one know if it roots. So far it has not rotted.

These are all NOIDs. I just wrote colors on them.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

Ok thanks.

Lubbock, TX

A friend walked into the room where I have my cuttings. She saw one labeled NOID.
She asked me what a noid was and what color is a noid. I had to bite my tongue on that one till she left. My mother did the same. I have had more fun with a cutting named noid.

If that one is in the last batch I sent out it is this one that is blooming now.

Sandi, how long do these lovely blooms last? Ooooh they're so gorgeous!!!!

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

A couple of days. The are about 4-6 inches across and in the funnel shape.

Makes me hope that my other ones will bloom this summer, thought most are from last year cuttings so I may have to wait another year. But all most all are putting on new growth, wish I had the shade house last summer.

The piece I cut off and took with me on our trip is still in the water and it has not rotted yet but no sign of roots yet either.

I root my epi oxy in water and they take about 2 weeks before rooting.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

ok Let's see I put it into the water about Dec 27-28

Wren, did it root in water?

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

No roots and I was reading that the roots that develop in water are water roots and they die when you put it into soil. But they will plump up a cutting that has dried out a little to much. So I will stick with the soil for rooting.

Thanks, I have recently learned about rooting them upside down and it has really helped. That way you don't have to wait for the cuttings to callous. I tied it with several that I had in november and so far they have all rooted.

Linda the epi nut wannabe. LOL

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

I rooted one upside down because it kept rotting . It rooted but so far has not put out any new growth. I also rooted a small piece laying on top of the soil. I have come to the conclusion that there is not one true way.

Did you see about my CC's fruit? I now have a number of fruit developing on my CC's There are two on the plant in the picture.

Wren, That is awesome! I haven't ever seen them fruit before. Did you hand pollinate them?

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

Yes The tricky part is I still don't know when it is the best time to pollinate. It seems to be a couple of days after the bloom is opened fully. I wrote the color on to the leaf. I wish I had names for the plants. Maybe I can buy name plants later.

I bought those named varieties from direct gardening, but after the tangerine one bloomed fuschia and the white bloomed red, I don't know what I have. it is obvious thought that they are not what i thought I was buying.
They are beautiful, but i don't know now whether to trust the varieties they told me I was getting.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

I had my droughts(?) about that place. The catalogs looked odd.

I have a good orange and white if you need some.

Thanks, I have a white that is tinged with fuschia, but I do not have an orange. I need to send you the tangerine twilight cactus again. I will wait for the weather to warm a little. What do you think?

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

Let's wait. It is going to be freezing weather down here. Just remind me. I have one that is white/white the only pink is the piston. but I read that that the temp that the buds are set will effect the white and the yellow flowers.. Can't remember if it is high or low but one will cause them to have pink in them.

That will be great. Thanks

Linda
