This is probably the weirdest question posted here...

Hometown, IL(Zone 5a)

I just saw a program on the Science channel that said biologists are trying to produce a living dinosaur (or dinosaur like) creature using a chicken egg and special proteins to turn on dormant genes in the embryo. These genes were supposedly inherited from their dino ancestors and are still present. The chickens they were using were called silky chickens, I think. They were white, and had fuzzy legs. (And were really cute chickens! :D)

I was raised in the suburbs and know nothing at all about raising chickens, so I thought I'd ask you folks on this thread- do you think they could ever really do this?

Weird, I know, but I just had to ask. If there's one thing I've learned about DG, it's that someone probably knows the answer...

And my apologies in advance if this is not the kind of thing you should ask on this forum...it's the first time I've posted to this forum, and it seemed like the most likely place to find out.

Thanks,

Marsha.

They do say that chickens are the closest relative to the T-Rex.
I don’t know, science is crazy...Everyone is so excited to create something they forget to ask...Why should I , or should it be created. The dinosaurs had their time and are gone. I myself don’t want to meet them. hehehe
I suppose anything is possible though.
Welcome to the forum by the way!

You need Catscan for this one she could probaly give you the answer what you are asking.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

I can just see it now a 20 foot tall rooster with teeth!!!!! I hope not!!!
Thought the egg of a 20 foot hen could feed all of us.

And welcome to the group

Elbridge, NY(Zone 5a)

Can you imagine the omlets we could make???
LOL Wren!

(Tia) Norman, OK(Zone 7a)

LOL Marsha, I seen the same thing. Hubby and I just looked at each other. Weird!!!!!

What about them emu dino things they think to make.

Silkies were the white cute chickens they mentioned at first.

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

I'm with all of you. What a crazy thought. I sure as heck don't want to meet one either!

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

Specially in the dark!!! I don't ran to fast any more!!!!!!

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

What's the point of running? It'd just crush yer house. EEK!

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

My house is concrete blocks so once inside I would be safe but the problem would be getting there. LOL

(Zone 6b)

Not sure if this is true, but I read last year that the UK approved scientists to combine the genes of men and animals, making manimals.

I wish they would stop. No telling what will happen. Mad scientists. Maybe "Men in Black" and "Jurassic Park" weren't totally fiction.

Instead of trying to re-create a dinosaur, I think they need to find the answer to the on going question first, "what came first, the chicken or the egg?" LOL!!! Then spend our tax dollars trying to re-create a dinosaur.^_^

Yes, lets put that as a stipulation to all that work. If they can find the answer to that then they (May) get funded for their madd scientist stuff. Thanks for the idea gardener!

Williamsburg, MI(Zone 4b)

It's not so much about making a dinosaur as it is the " turning off of dominate genes". This could create huge medical advances, the same as combining human and mamal DNA. There is a great deal of research going on to try to make organs for transplant more compatible. Many of our vaccines and medications are produced from animals. some vaccines are grown in eggs. Pig valves are used in heats and perhaps someday they can use the whole heart, livers or other organs for transplant. It would save thousands of lives a year.

Reynoldsville, PA(Zone 6a)

if they can alter a chicken embryo to make it have teeth like it's ancestor dino relatives and use human baby immune systems and transplant them in a mouse for aids testing, then honestly someday anything will be possible.

Welcome Machikoneko! I'm glad to see a new poster here! Don't worry.. your question is more than welcome here.. I'm not sure if anyone can answer it definitively, but looks like you got some good response goin! It's a great subject!

I'd think Silkies are a great candidate, since they are the best moms... if anything can hatch a dinosaur, a silkie probably can.. (Isn't that right Silkiechick!)

Very interesting indeed... Thank you for posting!

Reynoldsville, PA(Zone 6a)

yes indeedy a silkie will hatch air if u let them among many other odd things, lmbo.

however i'm confused why they used silkies the closest dino like chicken is a red jungle fowl the ancester of all domesticated chickens, it is the purest strain of chicken dna but it has to be a pure RJF it cannot have a trace of anything else or it could throw all experiments.

i have a question though why not guineas? they look the closest raptors for birds. hmm... mabe the cromozone count is not right and only closest with chickens i'm not for sure. i got a website link for u all to check out with kool guineas. let me find it, it has other amazeing animals as well pictured it is a member of byc who raises them. i want u to look at their exotic guineas and tell me they don't have a sort of prehistoric awesome look to them. i'm curious ur thoughts on them, i think they do look it and r just down right awesome and gorgous!!
brb

Reynoldsville, PA(Zone 6a)

Vulturine Guineafowl is what they r called. please checkout the other pics on the site they have amazeing animals to see. i think a guinea is more closer in dna and what they r looking for way more than a silkie.

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

Dey wook wike dey have wittle ear muffs on.... ohhhh... aren't they horrifying?!? ;-)

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

I think the reason they where using silkies was that they where doing other research on silkie eggs when they noticed the chick going through stages that showed the old turned off genes.

Elbridge, NY(Zone 5a)

WOW! Those Guineafowl are awesome! The blue is great!
I really want the showgirls as well ZZ. I am waiting on eggs that were sent out last Monday!
Silkie, can you post pics of the one in your brooder? I just love them!

Clarksburg, MO

Great Silkie-

Thanks alot for the post. Now I was a ZORSE! Claire will probably beat me to it though. God help us all if she sees this link.

As for the guineas, I will not come within 15 feet of them. They have evil in their eyes. The colors are just to lure in the unsuspecting. LOL

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

There's a Zorse for sale in our area! I can't believe how adorable they are! I'm so getting one if I get property some day.

I've seen a Zonkey and they are adorable too.

Hometown, IL(Zone 5a)

Thanks for all the welcomes! I love DG; the people are all so friendly here.
This has me wondering- if the dino-chicken ever comes to be, will we be saying "Oh, it tastes like dinosaur?" when you are serving an exotic meat? ;D

Clarkson, KY

Very knowingly and nodding like we know it all!!! ;-p....

Elbridge, NY(Zone 5a)

Ah yes! Tastes like T-rex! mmmmm
