Sometimes you just hate to toss one. This one has everything we look for in a brug but it's too close to too many others, including Elizabeth posted above.Compost pile here we come. The cross here is Becca Lynn x Dorthea.I would have expected color.

Why would you toss it? Why not offer it for postage to those who would love to have it? I just don't understand someone posting that they plan to compost a lovely plant - why do folks do such a thing? Explain it to me!

Milton, FL(Zone 8a)

OK,I'll try.Hybridizers grow out hundreds of plants each year.If we sent all of the rejects out for postage then we would soon have the online brug community flooded with noids and pretty soon someone would give them a name and start selling them on Ebay.
Now,as to why this is posted....this is just to show that not all the nice ones should be named.Only those with marked differences from exiting cultivars should be registered.
That said,I bet I don't make that mistake again.

although it would be very generous and maybe a little time consuming to prep and ship ,theres nothing wrong with composting. in reality it saves fuel and goes back into the planet .that plant was grown from a seed and any one could do it theres no shortage of brugs or seeds or people giving away cuttings or seeds .

But if you look at the one's that is trying to start out with Brugmansia.I say that is a good thing to do.Their is alot of people that love brugmansia and it's hard to get them.I think it's a good idea to give it to someone who will love it til the end.I'm just now getting in to them this year and they are hard to come by.So to me i don't see nothing wrong with giving one to a good home.

(dana)Owensboro, KY(Zone 6a)

theres nothing wrong with it either way . someone shouldnt get called out if they dont want to ,or have the time to ship plants . especially hybridizers who work hard and spend money to develop cultivars that are the best to put their name on . iris hybridizers daylily rose hybridizers all compost plants that arnt great . all fall there were brug giveaways . infact i now have 20 something of bought and free brugs and grown from seed .i saw at least 5 people giving away cuttings this fall . besides why should someone be judged on how they handle their plants . i find it so interesting when hybridizers show their process but now they wont for fear of being judged

Well JT, it may not be distinct or remarkable enough for you to keep it, but it sure shows what a good grower you are, both for being disciplined about what to keep, as well as for raising such a beautiful plant. That thing is glowing with health.

What do you see in 'Elizabeth' that you like more than this one?

Coushatta, LA

Oh,don't get me wrong.I have alot of brugmansia now thanks to a sweet lady.If it was not for her i wouldn't have the plants i have now. It's just nice that people do take the time to share their cuttings. No they don't have to share but they do take the time out for that. For the ones that do it,that means they enjoy sharing something special.

gone to seed ,
Very nice brug there and can see where others don't understand but we have to understand those of us that are just happy to have one and like you , you are trying to bring out the best in the field of Brugs, I still just enjoy the old time white nane unknowm but has long tendils and smells awesome, but hav seen what you are working for and think it is awesome!!

I, for one, do not want to see posts like this disappear. I've learned a lot from hybridizers like JT, who take the time to share information not found in any publication. We have access to great cultivars, thanks to JT et al, because someone took the time to weed out all but the very best. The only way to make sure that only the best remain is to compost the rest.

Milton, FL(Zone 8a)

Shushinggrasses types>>What do you see in 'Elizabeth' that you like more than this one?
Absolutely nothing. That's the whole point here.'Elizabeth' came first and there is no point in registering another so similar.Had they bloomed together it would have been a difficult choice.

Seale, AL(Zone 8b)

I hate composting, but it is a necssary evil and for al the reasons that were explained.

Just take a look at Daylilies. There alot that are great, but there alot of look alikes too that really are not differnt enough that they shoudl have been registered.

JT... What about usign it as a breeder? Do you think it might have something hidden that would come out a generation or two down the line?

I hate composting unless it can possibly used as a bridge plant. I am looking at it havign smaller flowers it seems. Coudl just be the pic. Wondering what it might do gainst my Valley Baby Doll double minature when it grows up. Always lookign for smaller white s for when it time to breed it.

I like posts like this one. We all need to be reminded periodically that it is ok to throw a plant out. I feel so guilty sometimes when I throw out cuttings after giving a plant a necesary haircut. It occurs to me that someone out there would love to have them and root them. We can't save everything and some things are not suitable to saving for whatever reason. Keep up the good work and may your next brug be name worthy!

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

gonetoseed, I know it is hard, when you are trying for that special one, and I agree it is OKAY to throw out instead of giving when it might cause unknowns to be mis ID like I got from ebay last year, and embarrassed myself posting the life of it in my back yard, and had it not been for someone here educating me because of the mis ID, I would have never known how important it is to have the hybrids names be true...someday, I hope to try to hyridising, but until I can even spell it, I am not trying it! LOL
that said, I still would give any of my noids away, as long as the person understands they are NOIDS... I am still red in the face over my ebay purchase from last year and will never do that again..
PS: I through out a ton of lantana starts because they were not true to the mother plant.. not a brug, but same point.. I have someone wanting starts off my plants and if they are not true, I throw them away..

Do what you think is best. I understand both points of veiw very clearly, For instance when I go to my local flea market it can be very hard to get people to see past white or pink and appreciate the size and wisth and flush. Go on creating. Its always hard to see any hit compust but it could be a nessary evil if you are trying to promote a bigger healthier plant. I didnt understand at first either but now I get it. JT is 100% correct in his analysis and decision to compost a brug that too closely resembles something else out there. As a fellow hybridizer my main goal is to improve upon the various cultivars by creating better, stronger more bug resistant strains. To propagate and cultivate a "clone" is simply a waste of time and as JT pointed out would simply flood the market with "junk" brugs. JT is simply doing what any responsible hybridizer should do.

Bravo to Gary and JT for theyre decision to control quality of the Hybrid Brugs, which always was the goal of Monika to control the quality and beauty.

JT I am proud of you!!!!!!! : ) "Compost pile here we come"

You have done the right thing.

I would have thought there would be some color also.

Smoke it. New Years is coming...time to visit the ancestors...

Rose it is actually not hard at all to get brugs, in fact JT (Gone2Seed) almost always has many excellent culitvars for you to choose from (better than this compost brug) right here at DG Marketplace at very, very reasonable prices. The brug-buying community is small and we have a limited amount of growing space, so when sellers give away junk brugs for free they will reduce their overall sales. It would really be unreasonable of us to begrudge an honest small-time nurseryman his tiny profit. :^)

I already knew people out their sale Brugmansias.
