I noticed this strange leaf coloring on my little strep 'Falling Stars' a couple of weeks ago. It doesn't seem to be getting any worse and I'm baffled about what might have caused it. I moved it to a slightly larger unglazed pot in September because I was woried about root rot. I lost 'Black Panther' to a particularly persistent case of root rot this spring. (At least I think that was the problem.)
Has anyone seen leaves like this?
Did it get too close to the window on a frosty night?
looks like cold damage to me also,
JIM
I must be bored to be on the internet on a Saturday night...........
Why don't people take two streps, for example, and put them in the same pot if the blooms compliment each other? I have a Space Dust I love because one group of crowns bloom true while another group of crowns don't bloom true, but they are beautiful when both sides are blooming.
Here are some blooms that aren't blooming true...........can't wait for the other side to get going again......
If it is from cold glass-- I covered my window with bubble wrap (after I found episcia stolons frozen to the glass--ooops) It really helped, the episcias are happier too.
zone 7 can get pretty cold can't it..............didn't realize you had weather that cold, T.
Low for Z7 is 10°--but we had 6° a few mornings back--haven't had temps that low in several years. If we ever get this cabin finished-- we will have double pane windows--but I think the guy that built it used whatever he found on the side of the road.. btw-- I like the idea of growing 2 different streps in a pot--would be like a bouquet!
I get excited just thinking about which two would look fabulous together................this may be a spring project.
What made me think of it was I was taking pictures the other night and happened to have about 5 pinks that looked great together and I started thinking 'why not'?
So how cold does it have to get for cold damage? This plant has been on my coffee table at least 6 feet from the nearest windows, which are well insulated at night. The coldest it would have been is about 55°. It certainly seems like something physical because the dividing line is so distinct. The paler part of the leaf show no other symptoms such as softness or drooping. The damaged parts of the two leaves are hanging over the edge of the pot. Maybe there was a cold draft at some point.
Gail, 'Falling Stars' is currently sharing it's pot with the no-name pink that's behind it in the second photo. I liked how they looked next to each other when they bloomed this spring so I stuck them both the same wide, shallow pot during one of my houseplant-spa days.
I wonder if something got dumped in it,maybe extreme overwatering?i just dont know
Because the roots are so shallow on streps, I think the biggest mistake people can make is putting the plant in too large of a pot. And......if I have to use a 4 or 5" pot I make sure that the bottom half is perlite. (I don't know..........just guessing)
I definately have to defer to Jim and Gail as I am just beginning to grow streps---but if you don't think you have over-watered --have you sprayed any cleaner/polish on your table? Obviously-- I have no life today-- just lurking here at DG^_^
you can lurk and talk to me today hgran, tell me about your visit to daves
I'm here too Gran! Wanna hear about Dave's....^_^
It was awesome Jim!! Rooms of nothing but gessies. There were so many blooms it was really hard to take it all in. And then I had to live within my budget. I had my DD with me-- who could kill a silk plant and even she enjoyed it. Her comment was "He talked to me like I don't have 2 brown thumbs!" I plan to go back in a couple weeks or so-- he said I could bring my camera so I will post pics. btw I was s'posed to tell you that giving you h#&& was to be my Christmas gift to Dave.
Wow, if you cut off 10" already that must be one enormous leaf!
The plant may have been left too close to a cold window the last time we cleaned the house. I know the coffee table was empty for a while because DH cleaned it with Murphys and oiled it. I guess we will have to be more careful about where we leave it during temporary relocations.
I figured the new pot would be good for streps because it's 6" wide but only 2.5" deep. When I repotted, the roots from the old pots went all the way to the bottom of the new pot. I'm not sure where I bought it; it was in my shed for a long time. I think I've seen them labeled as fern pots at the garden center.
Okay, one more gratuitous strep photo. This is 'Cherry Pie'.
I always love Cherry Pie and am assuming there is a leaf down somewhere of her!
Gail,
I just received my welcome packet from the Gesneriad Society last night. I was reading a back issue of one of the publications and there was a piece on unifoliate streps. They offer seeds of the 'Cape Essence' streps. I was going to buy some until I read your post. LOL 10" is a lot to cut off. The bloom is very pretty though.
Katlian, your 'Cherry Pie' is pretty. I'm patiently waiting for my babies to get big. I foresee blooms in the next 6 months. LOL
