The male Diamond was trying to force his mate off the nest christams eve. I tried to stop him and he kicked out an egg which fell to the bottom. I picked it up and wanted to throttle the bird and it was empty all the insides had dried to one end. Just a small clump of dried yolk in one end and the rest just empty shell.
So i said i will look at the other same thing nothing in the egg and i had personally saw these birds mate.
Well i'm done D-o-n-e Done!
Then i hadn't mentioned this but monday something ate one of my doves. I had forgotton to cover the end of the roost with hardware cloth and something pulled one of my white doves thru the chicken wire.
Nothing left but bloody feathers clinging to the wire.
Round 3 and still Duds
Oh So sorry!!! ((((((hugs))))))
Oh no! I'm sorry that happened Harmony. Makes me think it's just a bad time of year for them to incubate?
I know it's hard to loose any.. Especially when we make a mistake.. but Harmony, you do so much for your birds, you can't be perfect. Take a break.... count your blessings.. we are here for ya!
Oh, that's awful! I'm so sorry, such a disappointment. But ZZ's right... we can only do our best, and you do very well indeed.

Hi Harm: I don't know, but I had a similiar experience years ago when I was raising rabbits. Something pulled one of my rabbits right through the wire, Nothing left but the fur and head. I could not believe it. I monitered them for some time and found out it was a racoon. Harm is it possible that yes you watched them mate, but sometimes it takes several failures and then boom! Success. Don't give up my dear friend. You will pull it off, your not doomed for failure, but Success. I'm reaching out with good vibrations to you. You Rock. Cmon Cuz! Haystack
Can't add anything more than they have, but sorry to hear it, Har...
ditto what grow says... i'm so sorry. hang in there
so sorry to hear janet, that really bums me out. don't worry things will change and before u know it u'll have babies to spoil and love. mabe it's just their cycle is off or they need vents or tails trimmed? sometimes that causes duds and they need a little help to get it right.
the first round with 2 pigeon nests the eggs were duds for me and one pair has not reset eggs yet. however 1 pair has and babies r due anyday!! i candled them yesterday or day before i think it was. stupid me forgot to mark date laid and last i looked were little embryos size of erasers with spider web veins. when i just candled last they were dark blobs with white aircells so i figure in about 4 days i should have squeakers hatching. i was ready to give up and boy did they sure surprise me so u hang in there and keep ur chin up cuz urs will too when u least expect it.
i'll let u know how these do and take pics. keep trying and don't give up on them someday when everything is right they will make u beautiful babies u'll see.
mary
Thanks all and the encouraging words mean alot ^_^
But in the long run this was basically a trial basis as it was to see if i liked them.
I think they are cute little birds but just not for me i'm not really a caged bird kind of person.
They are really quiet and pretty but cleaning up feathers and seed all over the floor just isn't something i want to do.
I've had them since october and they should have succeded by now with nesting. I personally believe they may be older birds and the male won't leave the female alone to nest.
They could also be bro/sis and the eggs won't genetically hatch.
All three times it appeared the egg at some point had started but died so i don't really see any more tries would be successful.
I will sell them i sold my silvers to a breeder and will do the same with these.
Silkie congrats on your pigeons you will have those ugly naked babys soon and they are something how fast they grow (don't blink) LOL
You said trim feathers i've never trimmed feathers my fantails and owls mate without being trimmed.
I wouldn't trim their tails thats how they balance on their perch now vent feathers ?? i guess if you thought they were in the way??
I haven't been doing this but 2 years and maybe i just haven't had one that needed trimming.?.
this is info someone posted on my thread on byc- yes feathers would be in the way preventing proper breeding it happens with chickens also(like fluffier cochins, silkies ect and they need trimmed).
Sometime with first set of eggs only one or none are fertile. Think she may lay before mating. The frillback sometimes may need vent feathers trimmed.
Breeds like fantail, need tail feathers trimmed.
Long legg feathers like the trumpters need trimmed.
Jacobins need trimmed so they can see to breed.
i am not sure about diamons but mabe there is a reason there too. most cage birds unless they r about 8-12 years old the males don't go sterile. do diamonds both nest like my frills do? i let them share that to much work for 1 bird. if the egg had the white dot on the yolk but rings didn't grow around it then they were not fertilized and the blastoderm never grew. if feathers r in the way preventing breeding yes it would keep the male from fertilizeing it properly and a dot may or may not grow but the blastoderm wouldn't form to look like a bullseye.
if they r in a wire cage u can get things made of elastic and netting to go around the cages to keep stuff in and cleaner. i can't with my one set of pigeons cause it is an antique parrot cage they won't fit them with what they sell at the pet store but i tied boxes around the cage and that worked. my others have osb lofts so only the front is open and it keeps most of their stuff in. my 11 cockatiels now they r the messy ones but have a huge flight pen so noway to keep seeds from bounceing out or feathers, lol.
as long as they r not brother and sis from the same hatch/clutch i don't think that matters but i'm not 100% sure on that. i thought that only caused deformities if from same clutch? line breeding if done right does work but shouldn't cause serility and death as far as i know.
thanks so much, i'm dieing to meet my new uggies, rotfl. hmm. i'll do some searching on the net see if i can find anything else that might help. i hate to see u sell them all i know how much u love ur birds and were so looking forward to babies. have u asked on pigeon talk about it to see if anyone there mabe can help?
mar
Silkie I have Fantails and they mate and have babys i have a white pair on eggs now. I haven't trimmed their feathers and i haven't heard any of my pigeon friends talk about it.(i will ask tho)
The jacobins yes i've been told they need their head feathers trimmed to see their mate.
My Diamonds trust me i'm not upset and i'm done as i said it was a test run to see if i liked them.
Just not a cage bird person:)
Can't wait to hear about your new babys!!!!
Whoa! The horror imagining that! I am so sorry about the eggs too. Nasty critter whatever it was.
Had it happen more than i would like i think it's a roaming Weasel.
Harmony, I am so sorry to hear about the preditor! It is awful.
I wish there was something i could say but everything I think of is lame.
I will just say...I am thinking about you.
best of luck w/ ur fantails when r they due? can't wait to see pics and hear all the details on them!!!
Silkie i have no idea they started sitting when i was sick and my DH was takeing care of them.
I had been removeing the eggs as it's winter and i didn't want any babys now. But when i found them sitting i didn't have the heart to unset them they are a great pair and really love eachother.
They are such good parents too until i just couldn't take their eggs.
That ISP thing on the other thread is kind of scary do folks really not have any privacy. Can anyone see where you have been and what you are doing?
I thought my security handled all that?
no, that is only admins that have that power on their own site and it is regulated by federal law. it is a violation of federal law to use it for anything other purpose than ur site or to protect the community on it.
