I made a bird seed wreath for the birds for Christmas. I couldn't find the angel food cake pan so I used a glass to make the hole. Now it's stuck. Any ideas how to get it out without breaking the wreath. O bother, no wonder I flunked crafts sigh :(
Help with My Birdseed Wreath Please
Maybe flipping it upside down and standing it in a short bowl of ice water. That would slightly shrink the glass.
My only other thought is to pour oil down the sides of the glass and try twisting it out.
Yippeeee! The birds sure will be happy!!
What finally worked?
I just closed my eyes and gently jiggled it and because it hasn't completely set it came out. I will use something wider next time to make a bigger hole methinks. This one looks more like a Birdseed Donut than a Birdseed Wreath LOL.
They'll love that dahlia!
Oh, but there's a lot more food in a birdseed donut! Tie on a pretty bow, maybe with a couple of branches (bare or evergreen) that the birds can perch on if they're inclined... you're going to have the most popular party house on the block as far as your feathered friends are concerned!
Willing to share the Recipe( Directions)?
Dahlia, that is very cool. It never crossed my mind to make sure a thing. hehehe. Thanks for sharing. I hope you share the recipe, too.
Birdseed Wreath
Ingredients:
1 1/2 cups water
4 1/4 ounce pkgs. Knox unflavored gelatin
8 cups birdseed
Boil 1 1/2 cup water.
Empty the 4 packages of gelatin into 8 tablespoons of cold water in a large bowl.
Let the gelatin sit for 1 minute.
Add the boiling water and stir for 2 to 3 minutes or until the gelatin has dissolved.
Stir 8 cups of birdseed into the gelatin, mixing thoroughly.
Let the mixture set for a few minutes, then stir again. Repeat this process a few times allowing the seed to absorb the liquid.
Spoon the mixture into a greased bundt pan and put in the refrigerator for at least 3 hours.
Remove the wreath from the mold by inverting the pan and tapping along the bottom. The pan may need to warm to room temperature before the wreath will come out.
Allow the wreath to dry on a cooling rack overnight or longer if necessary.
Use several strands of raffia to form a loop to hang the wreath.
i was looking at recipes for this kind of thing earlier this week and saw the gelatin version. Did you ever try the egg white version? i'm going to try something, but don't know which.
I was going to make suet balls with lots of seed. I wound up having not enough suet and they all fell apart. Same thing with the ones I put in the mini-bundt pans. Oh well, it's easy enough to start over!
This is the first time I've tried this Mrs_Ed so its the only version I've tried.
Thanks! I tagged it with the label "birdseed wreath" so I'll be able to find it again. :-)
What a nice gift for the birds...thanks fo much for posting the recipe, I can't wait to try it!
Here is the link I saw for your recipe, dahlia… http://familyfun.go.com/decorating-ideas/gardening/feature/famf0203_proj_treats/ only smaller batch.
Here is the egg white one I was looking at for bells…

OMG, Dalhlia. LOL, I can just picture Bert's crash and the look on your face!!!
Oh my goodness...I can't imagine what Bert looks like!! LOL!
cool links Marna!
Oops I didn't think about the Bert factor as I didn't think he would be interested in the smaller seed LOL
Too funny!!
Marna...that bell calls for help from a grown up.....hmmmm...
Can you 'glue' it back together with some peanut butter.
I'll have to take a look at my laptop, I think the links I saw previously were on it. (I've been reserving battery power until I get a new adapter.) I distinctly remember another link that I can't find now.
Anyway, i was looking for these things because I've seen big seed wreaths for sale that don't use suet. My feeling was that i could use syrup, just like a popcorn ball. So i started searching.
That bell DOES look complicated, eh Rose?
I bet that would work gardenglory but since peanuts are Bert's favorite it would become a magnet for sure. I might put the whole thing in an onion bag which won't be attractive but it will work. Hopefully now that Bert has investigated this one he will leave the next one alone?
Dahlia, thanks for the link to this thread!
Marna, did you try the egg white or syrup recipes?
Oh good gravy, I can't remember that far back. ha. I tried something and it didn't work, but I don't think it was either syrup or egg white.
Jill, are you making some of these. I am, I need any and all hints if youve already done one.
I don't have any underway at present... just trying to gather some ideas.
I see more and more of the decorative ones out for sale now and it would be nice to master them.
Has anyone tried the safflower star? I always see them at bird stores.
Nope, not me. too 'spensive! Saw some gorgeous trees in BOSS at farm and fleet.
I think this calls for the thing we Southerners use in a pinch - for everything from covering holes in our underwear to repairing failed prophylactics --- duct tape. That should hold your wreath together.
I'd like to see Bert's face when he crashes into that. :)
Hack
*snort* Hack, you are so funny.
Hack you are brilliant! AND duct tape is silvery so it would be festive ^_^
Actually, I believe duct tape comes in a variety of festive colors, now. LOL
REALLY Critter??? I'm SO going to check that out ^_^
I took a picture of my amyrills blooming to post yesterday. I took a good look at the picture...thank goodness. Whats on the mirror in the background...duct tape. You get so used to seeing that stuff that you dont see it.
As for the bird seed projects...i have opted for just stuffing the seed mixture with it molases glue, into pine cones and putting one on each side of a ribbon to hang over the tree limb.
Dahlia, check out the selection on the Duck Tape site: http://www.duckbrand.com/Products/duck-tapes/color-duck-tapes.aspx
