Water Chestnut [Water Caltrop, trapa natans]

Erwin, TN(Zone 7a)

does anyone else raise these in a pond, ?? [8 foot K-Mart kiddie pool] I have found a variety that is quite good, and I posted a picture in the plant files, --it has a nut inside about the same size and shape as a Brazil nut, --and is quite tasty.

Oh, my, I have guppies in just that kind of pool.

How'd you get started? Where from your seed or first plants? I have water hyacinths right now, for to balance the fish, I'd love a food in there instead!

I found them growing in the swamp near where I live, -but did not know what they were until I saw them at a Chinese food market, they look quite diferent from the pictures I have seen of the northern varieties, ----so now I grow and gather some , -and boil and eat them, --they are quite good [in my oppinion]

Have never found any of those. If you are looking for food plants though I think that lotus tubers are edible. I know that the bottom parts of cattail stalks are edible and you can grow those in big pots. Just pull the stalk straight up and eat the white part. It takes a lot like cucumber. The only drawback is that it is kind of slimy like okra tends to be.

MM-why is there a crate in your guppy pond? Is this a technical thing or a MM thing?

They have to be cooked to eat them, [unlike Chinese Water Chestnuts that can be eaten raw] but I find them to be worth the extra work, they are a little hard to crack open if they are not cooked enough, --

A Guppy room, MM. Just some place for them to go hang out, as I believe just the pool would be very boring, and they might start fin-nipping. They have lots of personality, and curosity.

I'm really getting into taking photos of the little buggars, see:

Lotus is a very big plant, waterlilly. There is a carefully packaged piece of root in the grocery store that I've looked at closely twice now. Like a huge carrot with holes inside. Something like $15 a pound. And it might just taste like a potato, I don't know. I'm not quite that much of a spendthrift!

Ah, well, I'll stick with the water hyacinth.

Interesting looking roots, Michael!

Your guppy shots are lovely. I have never had those because of the winter weather we have here and no room in the house during the winter. But you make it very tempting -----

Even a small aquarium, ten gallons, is a delight that brings joy and peaceful distraction.

No, I'm not an aquarium salesperson!
