National Animal Identification System (NAIS)

(Zone 6b)

Cottage_Rose mentioned getting a publication called "Poultry Press" for finding quality poultry. When I looked it up I came across this article about having to tag your animals with a microchip that can be tracked from satellite.

http://www.poultrypress.com/hobby/ It's this one: Why You Should Oppose the USDA's Mandatory Property and Animal Surveillance Program

Anyone know what's going on with this now?

I have to read this in awhile.
It sounds interesting though! Thanks!

Hi there LFJesus: This Pig headed idea went down in defeat this past year, and if it raises it's ugly head again we will file complaints and defeat it again. Just wanted to give you an update. We should however keep our eyes open for big Brother ideas and thanks for the heads up. Have a Christ filled christmas and a very Happy New Year. Haystack.

Elbridge, NY(Zone 5a)

Thanks for the update Haystack! Hows the weather now?

Ferndale, WA

Hi Sewincircle: The weather here is crazy, about two and a half feet where I'm at and the temps are runing between 10 for a low and about 28 for a high, with a forecasted six more inches tonight. Some places in the state are totally shut down and under disaster watch, Such as spokane, Wa. and a few other places. My girls are having a severe case of coop fever, but when I open the Coop they will not come out. I brought sewincircle out today and she jumped into the air three times as if to say I don't like this what ever it is. Whereupon she flew directly back into the coop, which is not all like her. Wish you could see her, she is a beauty. And a great big yes, You are now mine and Karens new grand niece. Adoption papers to arrive soon. I truly wish you and your's a very Merry Christmas, with prosperity in the comming year. I have not heard from Lazy Ladies, so I'm hoping all is well with her. I know they had some rough weather in her area. Haystack

I did not know Washington got such severe weather! Wow. It sounds like there are a lot of people there who are going to be digging out for awhile! Today we are going back up to almost 40 after 4 days at 0-10. I will take advantage of that to get some fresh hay for the girls and get them out.
I can’t say that I blame sewincircle any! That snow is cold on her little feet! I must find a pattern for chicken bootys! Though the others may get jealous.
Yippy Great Aunt and Great Uncle Haystack! WoooHooo! That is exciting! My family is pretty small; it just got a little bigger! I am Wishing Great Auntie Karen and Great Uncle Haystack a very Merry Christmas! And a prosperous New Year!!!! (I will sigh papers and send them back as soon as they arrive, the weather may hold them up a bit but we will get it done) hehehe

Hi Grand Niece: The weather in Washington is generally not severe at all. But this year is an exception. I just heard on the local news this is the worst weather and snow accumulation since 1948. Which I remember very well as a twelve year old we had to go out and take the ice slabs off of the dairy cattle, we even had deer break into one of the barns for shelter, and two of our horses we used for logging died to severe temps, as we could not get them into the barn. It now has become very difficult getting to my two chicken coops to water the ladies, but they said they were expecting temps to rise to around 34 today. so maybe it will began to thaw. Since last night we have gotten another eight inches. Today I went out a got my steel pry bar so I could break through the packed ice and it measures about thirty eight inches of snow. We are still very high in spirits though and In the end the ladies will all be fine. Take good care of one another. Haystack.

I just read about your frozen pipes, I could tell from your words, that you were frantic and found myself tearing up and becoming frantic for you. Thank God for his goodness and your great and Dear Husband. Thank the good Lord I kept on reading the postings and finally came to yours when you said you had water and the pipes were unfrozen. I couldn't believe how relieved I was and found tears of joy for you. Trust me I was here rooting for you. You have become a treasured friend and family member. "SEWINGCIRCLE" YOU ROCK Uncle Haystack

Elbridge, NY(Zone 5a)

Thank you Great Uncle! It was a tense moment! I was not sure what exactly to do.
I sure did not want to crawl around in the basement, I am not even sure what pipes are what! hehehe I sure was Thankful when my DH came home. He had it fixed in no time!
Thanks for routing for me though! I need dear friends (family) like you!
Please stay off the roof, unless you are surrounded by marshmellows!

(Tia) Norman, OK(Zone 7a)

I felt for you also. I was with out hot water to my kitchen for a couple days last week. Hubby got a heater under there and poof we had hot water. Dh asked why am I the one that has to crawl under the house and do this, I just told him because your good at it!!!!! I didnt say what I wanted to tho.............. IF YOU would have wrapped them pipes like you said you were going to you would not have to crawl under there. Gotta love em.

Elbridge, NY(Zone 5a)

Luvs, too funny! Yes, it didnt take long to get the water back.
Once he got in there it was all better. Mine was not two days though!
Only a few hours! I am thankful.

Reynoldsville, PA(Zone 6a)

when it gets that cold leave the water trickle it will keep the pipes from freezeing. if they freeze find where it is and use a blowdrier to thaw them, don't leave them frozen any longer than necisary usually they will not break just thaw.
hope that helps for next time,
silkie

(Tia) Norman, OK(Zone 7a)

I watch the temps faithfully and usually turn the kitchen faucet on to drip when the temps drop real low but when someone comes behind me and gets a drink of water and then turns the water off. I am making a sign now, If the water is dripping there is a reason, if the pipes freeze YOU get to crawl under the house and thaw them out!!!!!!

Elbridge, NY(Zone 5a)

Thanks silkie! Can you believe its in the 50's today? I hope it sticks around a day or two.
The wind is gusting around 40 to 50 MPH. Unbelievable! Might blow the feathers right off my chickens. hehehe I will be sure to let the water drip from now on. Especailly when its wind chills are below zero. ;)

Reynoldsville, PA(Zone 6a)

ur welcome, i have to do that here all the time. some don't know that helps to keep em from freezeing. i know it hit about 50 here today i was in shock!!

(Zone 6b)

I always drip my faucets when it gets 15 degrees or less. Learned my lesson the hard way. We were without hot water three weeks once, when all the pipes in town froze, and the plumbers couldn't get to us. I didn't know how to fix pipes then. I do now.

I understand there are electrical wraps you can put around your pipes too. It keeps them warm. In Canada where it is often WAY below freezing, they use them all the time, or so I was told.

Reynoldsville, PA(Zone 6a)

yep it is called heat tape u can get it at lowes or similar places we use that and this year we built osb boxes around them and wrapped them with insulation it helps also. yep, we learned the hard way to,lol. my kid's r always wanting to turn them off but they r used to it now for the most part.

Foley, MO

I use heat tape. Works like a charm.
