Automatic clean water for my hens!

Dungannon, VA

My boyfriend and I are slowly become more self-sufficient. We've had a garden and chickens for the last few years, and the only part I couldn't stand was watering the hens. As we pulled our chicken tractors over uneven ground, watering containers would tilt and drain leaving our chickens thirsty on hot summer days. Our hens pooped in the waterer reservoirs and on the top of the handles --- nasty for us and them!

So my boyfriend got to work and developed an automatic waterer for our chickens which provides nearly unlimited clean water! Our hens love it --- they seem to get a kick out of pecking at the watering nipple and it's hard to argue with poop-free water. :-) We decided to sell our Avian Aqua Miser to get a little extra cash --- we sell the waterer itself for $30, a pack of three for $60, or a do it yourself kit for $15 (all with free shipping.) Check them out on our webpage --- http://waldeneffect.org/store/

What a great and inventive waterer. It is so much neater!
You and your boyfriend ought to make some money with that.
Good luck. Does the water freeze quickly though? I live in New York and my huge waterers freeze quickly. I have to rotate them to keep fresh and thawed water for them.
How many chickens do you have?
Great web site also. ^_^

Could you use heat tape on them?

I can argue with 30 bucks for a waterer.

Aren't those the nipple drinkers used for rabbits. I have something similer to that but it's for rabbit's and it's a nipple drinker. They aren't that expensive and you can buy the parts and fashion one out of most any bottle.

I can appreciate anyone selling their goods.. and wish you Good Luck.

On that note, there is a classified ads forum here for advertising that would give you great exposure.

Very cool waldeneffect. How'd you train them to use it? I've read about them using standard rabbit waterers, but that it takes training...

Kristen I've seen rabbit waters used for chickens but how do you get them to peck it??
I would be afraid mine wouldn't get the hang of it and dehydrate before i knew it.

That's what I was hoping Waldeneffect would tell us. I heard it was as easy as taking their beaks and making them peck it until you see them swallow. I dunno. *shrugs*

(Zone 7b)

It would be a whole lot cleaner mine somehow always find a way to poop in theirs.

Mine too!!!

Mine kick hay in theirs all the time. No matter how high I put it they manage! :/

Mine figured out how to peck at the standpipe in the garden to get water--I think they are attracted to drippy things.
