Leaf-cutting Bee (Lithurgus apicalis)
Hi jvivier,
Nice shot, but this is a Syrphid fly in the Family: Syrphidae; Order: Diptera.
It looks like one we have here, Scaeva pyrastri.

I see you have just joined today, welcome to DG! To make things easier for you I will contact BugFiles Admin. to move it after checking what you have there.
jvivier, I agree with wallaby1, that your picture is of the hoverfly Scaeva pyrastri. Flies differ from most other winged insects by only having one pair of wings, with the hind wings modified into club-like organs called halteres.
I have today moved your image to our page for Scaeva pyrastri here: http://davesgarden.com/guides/bf/go/663/
You might like to edit the caption you added to your image as it is not very appropriate for a hoverfly,
Kennedy
