MONTHS ago someone asked for help making their garden more "country cottage" looking. Some of the members had computer programs that were able to scan the photo, then add features and change the look. THAT is what I want, anyone have any suggestions about what programs are best and have the BEST features?
What is your favorite computer program for garden design?
I use Microsoft Power Point.
It lets you do anything you want. It doesn't have the defaults of many programs that restrict your design.
I made a map of my 5 acre vegetable garden on it. It is on a side hill with lots of small areas. Looks almost exactly as it is. Oh, by the way, you can do things to scale. You need to figure it out yourself, but simple once you get the number figured out.
I also use this program for designing kitchens & cabinets.

That would be fun wouldn't it? I have a hard time imagining how some of my plants are really going to look and figuring out where I want stuff to go. There are a few out there, but I know nothing about them either.

Some people like the programs from Sierra Design - I haven't used them, but they should be good. They offer landscape design and architectural design. If you don't have a Best Buy or comparable store near you, you might try Googling it.
Me, I like Photoshop, but you have to either find pictures of what you like or create them yourself. And that's far too costly of a program if that's all you're going to do with it.
Anyone else have any to add?
I've tried a couple of the programs from Sierra (gifts from other folks) but found them too blocky and restrictive for me. They sort of force you to put in the hardscape and house areas, and don't give you the flexibility I like with something like PowerPoint or Photoshop. I would agree with Pagancat though, Photoshop is pretty pricey if this is all you're going to do with it. I've even found using the Drawing function in Word to be useful as it lets you do fairly detailed stuff once you're used to it.
