Well, my injured girl that I reported about (and asked desperately for advice about) back in August has begun to lay!! Her first egg was earlier in the week and she has laid an egg each day since. I couldn't be happier!! We weren't sure how she would do - we finished her "condo coop" which allows her to be with the other girls, but separate - (runs next to each other, but safely separated by wire - still separate coop) and she laid her first egg the next day.
We have been getting an egg a day from all of our girls, even with this weather!!! We do only have 6 hens, but I have been reading that egg production is down for most. We must be doing something right?? !!!!
Eggciting news!!
Wonderful! You done good!
Too cool. Yes, you ARE doing something right! Good for you. I am so glad to hear it! Thank you for sharing.. gave me a big smile to start my day.
very good to here teresa! remind me of her injury and circumstances???
YES!!
That is eggciting!
She is all better now. I am happy for you!
And her! She must love the condo.
I would say you are doing everything right!
Good job!
Lazy - our girls are only about 6 months old right now.....shortly after we moved them outside into the coop, my husband discovered one of them badly injured (August). We THINK that something grabbed her from outside the coop (reinforced the chicken wire the same day with a finer gauge) and then the other girls pecked at her terribly - leaving her near dead, with NO feathers on her head, one eye badly damaged (full recovery - we thought she'd be blind in one eye!). It was awful. We nursed her back to health and tried (unsuccessfully) to reintegrate her. She is still missing lots of feathers from her head, but her eye looks perfect! She likes being next to the other girls, but doesn't really want to be completely with them (who could blame her!) We might try putting her with our other RIR, who is also fairly mild. But, for now, she is happily living separately with a view :)
I'll try to post some pictures later on today of the "addition" we put on for her.
Have a great day everyone!
Teresa
