Orange Slice Cake (Bread)

springfield area, MO(Zone 5b)

Cream together
1 C butter or margarine
2 C sugar
Add
4 eggs one at a time, beat well
Dissolve 1 tsp of baking soda in 1/2 C buttermilk, add this to the butter and sugar.

Place 3 1/2 C flour in a large bowl with the following
1 lb chopped dates
1 lb candy orange slices, chopped
2 C chopped nuts
1 can flaked coconut
Add this to the creamed mixture.
This makes a stiff dough that you should mix well with your hands.
Bake in bread loaf pan at 300 for 1 hour and 45 mins.

Combine 1 C fresh orange juice
2 C powdered sugar
Pour over the hot loaf. Let stand in pan overnight.

This is my Mother in laws recipe and it is SOOO yummy. I have never made it myself, so I am unsure how much this makes. It seems like alot of ingredients, maybe 2 loafs? The recipe says it's a cake, but she baked it in a loaf pan and sliced it like a bread. It also keeps in the frige for quite a while and is good cold, or warmed in the microwave.

I think you could change the recipe quite a bit as well.
Substitute raisins for dates.
Cherry or lime flavored slices instead of orange.
Pineapple juice instead of orange.
Walnuts, or Pecans.

My kids call it Candy Bread LOL
It is pretty rich, very sweet.
