According to Peterson's book, the white winged dove makes the sound of "who-cooks-for you" .
Now I read that certain owls make the same phrase. I know that at night it would be an owl but during the day, a white wing. Is this all true?
Last night I distinctly heard an owl going Hoo Hoo Hoo - all about the same length and not what I would call really loud as the trees are right out our back door - nice tall pines and a couple of live oaks. Naturally I didn't see "it" but would be interested in your thoughts as to what kind of owl it would be. Thanks so much in advance.

Maybe Great Horned Owl...try this website for its call:

Thanks for the information and the article.I am hoping that we will be able to witness an owl in ours and the neighbors' trees
Which leaves my original question about two completely different birds giving the same call of "who cooks for you". I have observed the white wing many times doing this but of course not the owl if there is one that makes the same noise.

You can hear Barred Owls doing their "who cooks for you, who cooks for y'all" at this site:

Thanks to both of you I have some idea of what to listen for and look for.

Keep in mind that Barred Owls make a number of different sounds, even one that sounds a lot like a monkey (scared the stew out of me one morning in the tree above my head). If it is a Barred and if it hangs around, you'll end up hearing other sounds. I've heard them as early as 3:30 in the afternoon on a cloudy day.
For years - 30 or 40 - I have collected lots of owl themed things such little and big "statues", etc., pictures, macrame hangings - just lots and lots of "stuff". I guess it's kind of like people who collect unicorn stuff. To me owls were mysterious and so different from other birds. We traveled extensively in the US, the Carribean and Europe and everywhere I went I inquired about owls in stores we visited and got some rather unusual renditions of owls. I have stopped collecting them as when I go no one is going to want my collection which is worth nothing to anyone but me but I enjoy it and display many of the creations throughout the house.

Oh, I wish I lived close to you I would just love to see your collection. I bet it is fabulous!
Just a bunch of junk, I'm told. But I like it. Thanks for the lift.

Just a bunch of junk, I'm told but I don't take it personally. Their collections and hobbies are a bunch of junk so we're even. LOL Thanks for the vote of confidence.
Ann
All that matter's is that you like it, after all it is yours...so enjoy! :)
