Broody Hens

Dighton, MA

Hey everyone! I haven't been on here in a while. Well, anyways I had a broody hen sitting on 5 eggs and 4 hatched! Now after about a month mommy is still with them in their bottom indoor cage. Just the other day I noticed that she had started to lay eggs everyday again. Is this normal? Does it mean the chicks move out?

If any could help me out I would appreciate it : ^ )

PS: that picture was taken on Nov. 7.

She may just be getting back into the swing of things...I hope you don't mean she's setting again?

No I just find another egg in there each day.

Sounds like she's just a great hen! Can I have her?! ;-)

Yeah.. I'd love to have her! Congratulations!

: ) thanks!! How long should they be together?

ps: this was my first time keeping chicks with mommy :) and it was a good one!

(Zone 7b)

I would say as long as she's happy and their happy let them stay together.

I would only remove them if she was aggressive towards them and by what you say she isn't.

How long is it before a mum hen typicaly lays eggs again?
Cos my chick hatched and its been about a month since he hatched and the mum hasnt started laying again yet.
Also how old are silkies when they begin to lay?

congratulations on the new baby chicks 4 out of 5 that’s good considering one you didn’t mean to hatch then and two you only usually get half of what there is. So yay! Baby chicks ha ha ha

I thought she was. I am planning on getting some Buffs next fall. I heard they are gentle and friendly.
