Helenium, is it worth growing?

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

This is a pic from Bluestone. Helenium 'Mardi Gras'. It is supposed to bloom a bit earlier than most. That is my problem with this plant. It usually blooms around the time I am having my end of summer burnout and I would probably not enjoy it really. Anyone grow this and when does it actually bloom? Is there something else with similar color that blooms earlier that you like?

Can't answer but I got the same book and thought it was beautiful!

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

WOW That would look great in my red garden if I cant find a coriopsis I like.
Hope there is some wade in for the real skinni.

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

I got the same catalog yesterday. I love bluestone.
That Helenium is gorgeous.
Don't know about it though, sorry.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

My helenium experience is spotty in general. Never tried that one. Some zinnias have just about those exact colors. For perennials, Oranges & Lemons Gaillardia blooms forever but is not as deep orange as that. It also does not have the big dark center.

Warners, NY

I just received my Bluestone catalog also, I've been wondering if I could plant the Helenium next to a clump of wild canada goldenrod and if they would bloom at the same time. I wouldn't dare tll my wife it's also called sneezeweed though because she gripes enouhg about my goldenrod. Does anyone know (flighty change of topic) if Adenophera lilifolium is the same plant you see escaped all over gardens in upstate NY?? I keep trying to get that "bluebell like" plant I see around old houses but I don't know if thats an adenophera. Last year got Aruncus, Thalictrum, Filipendula ulmaria from them,; I planted them with yellow foxgloves, yellow snapdragons, a yellow dahlia, and a yellow canna. Its going to take a while(years??) befor I get this area right. Not to mention my spelling!

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Bad spelling counts here where we dont have "spellcheck"
SC isnt perfect either, cant find such words as Hosta and I wrote to my saughter asking about her boyfriend Todd and the correction was Toad, somehou I failed to correct, now she is miffed at me.
I'm getting the vibe that helineum if iffy.
Think I'll stay with coriopsis,my BlueS cat hasn't come. Cant wait to see what the corriopsis look like.
My red garden has Crocosmia, torch lily, Shocking lilies,Dutch? something ,Heliopsis Loraine sunshine and I will add a border bushy something in butter yellow with a dark center if I cant find a red coriopsis.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

Toad... ouch

that helenium is beautiful

Ffld County, CT(Zone 6b)

Toad - that's too funny, lol.

I don't have experience with this particular helenium, but I grow Bright Buttons (grew from seed) and I love it. It grows nicely with a good amount of neglect - just gets a little crispy on the edges on occasion to remind me to water. Bright Buttons is a mix of yellow, orange, and a yellow/orange combo.

Mine bloom in August, I believe, so it's still well within the growing season. They spread nicely too. Not invasive or aggressive at all, but a nice spread to fill in spots and enough so I can share at swaps.

The thing that's driving me crazy is that I swear there was a thread on DG in the last year about helenium, one which I posted to, and I can't find it at all! But here are a few threads that might give more info or at least some pictures for your viewing enjoyment.

I love helenium. I have a few. I can't remember which they are. they were from some sort of group of colors like, mixed fall shades or something like that. two of them look very similar to the one on the cover of bluestone. The do best with fast draining soil, at least for me.

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Thanks for the links and info. Where is Big Al anyway? I knew there was some one here that had some of these. Also looking at all the petty rudbeckia that are out now. May have to get some 'Prairie Sun' and 'Goldilocks'.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

I got the same catalog and think they look great, but I don't have them so I'm no help.

I'm looking for something to replace a yarrow that should have been red and came up yellow. I need something red(maybe orange) for a dry area/part shade but the part of the day it gets sun is SUPER hot, 24" or taller to go behind moonbeam coreopsis and stella d'oro daylily.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

wow nice combo Jen

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

If it's well-drained, Agastache rupestris. Oranges & Lemons might also work. Gaura and salvias, if you don't mind annuals. Some of the newer echies might work too.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Got my Blueston catalogue.
Im in trouble now.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

has anyone grown Helenium Rubinzwerg? Lazy SS

Found this red plant that meets your height request while browsing through one of my fav plant sites. It could work for you for a red. http://www.gardencrossings.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=plants.plantDetail&plant_id=687
Then there is this for a little more height: http://www.gardencrossings.com/plant/Hibiscus_moscheutos_Luna%20Red

I just started with heleniums.
I think Bigcity Al had a bunch. Anyone heard from him lately?

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

No and we don't hear from you nearly enough either!
How are you Dave? Happy Holidays!!!!

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Yeah, where have you been???

Garden crossings must be working on there website I can't connect to it, with the link or just typing in their web address.

Long Island, NY(Zone 6b)

I received that catalogue too....got the spring planting juices flowing..

Westbrook, CT(Zone 6a)

A few years back I planted a bed with both helenium and helianthus seed. The helianthus took off like gangbusters but the helenium tanked. Considering the above recommendations, maybe I'll have to try it again.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

I'm going to order the MardiGras to go with Crocosmia and torchlily

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Thanks Patti...I like the Salvia

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

JoAnne that sounds like a nice combo. Pretty pics this summer I bet. Well I can't make up my mind on the perennials so when in doubt order shrubs. LOL. Victor will be proud. I got three smoke bushes and a pillar golden barberry. Also couldn't resist a new echinacea 'Pink Poodle'. My first order for next season and it felt good to buy a few new plants. It is a sickness isn't it. :)

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Yes I will order soon and definatly before the 28th to take advantage of the 15% discount on early orders.

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

I just cancelled the barberry. Big time brain drain. They are banned here, don't know if they would have sent it or not. It was the perfect size, shape and color for that spot. Decided to put weigela 'Ghost' there instead.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Are you ordering from Bluestone?

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

That order is from Garden Crossing. The Bluestone order is still being added to and subtracted from every time I go t the site. That order will go in time to get the discount though. Trying to whittle down to the absolutely positively must haves. It's not easy!

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Youve got thet right.
I fell in love withpersicaria Red Dragon and had to get help from pirl as to what to put it next too.
She said Brunerra Jack Frost. Could life get any better?

looks great huh?

That plant to the right looks tropical !

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

That sounds like the perfect combination. I have my brunnera JF with fernleaf bleeding hearts. This is in the spring with the forget-me-not like flowers blooming. Your two plants will compliment each others silvery coloring. Nice.

Glad we started this, its good to see summer in December.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Nice combo Jo Ann. Make sure part shade is the most light it gets.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

If you are talking aboutpercicaria ,its in a mid day shade and afternoon sun situ.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

The persicaria can take a decent amount of direct sun. The brunnera cannot.

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Yeah, bigcityAl has a bunch of heleniums. There is a thread about them somewhere by people who'd been in on a co-op and bought a bunch together, I think. (Is the search feature back on yet?) He sent me some seed.

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

There is a search feature to help you find your seeds?!
That is amazing!

Hi everyone!
