I went out against my will today and did some shopping ^_^

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

I know this is OT but I came back from frigid NY and ended up with a 'bloomin cold' My nose is running and my eyes tear when I try to read. I've been trying to catch up on all the posts, but can't seem to get in the grove. My holidays are gonna be 'gashtinky' if I don't get rid of this nasty cold. So forgive me if I don't post too often.

Williston, ND

you got my weather right,it sucks
glad to be in tonight

Jasper, AR(Zone 7a)

I was wondering the same thing--It is a busy timeof year tho-- and I am stuck out here in the boonies with nothing better to do than cruise DG^_^

South, TX

I've been busy. Almost finished with gifts. Now to finish my Christmas cards. I don't get up early, then I feed the little pets, then walk my little doggie, wash her feet. By then it is 11am. Always lots to do in the yard and in the house.

My Parrotlet is on a little playgym here at the computer. Hubby is making soup.

Well, let's see . . . Gail is supposed to be resting . . . M3rma1d lost power for at least 12 hours - went to a friends place until her power came back on (plants survived, I believe she said) . . . I've been working on organizing my plant stands . . .

Did manage to take a picture, though . . .

Power was out for over 24hrs here but all is well now thank god (at least where I am)
But things in other parts of New England aren't better yet, and so they're all in my thoughts. I'm going to house-sit in New Jersey tomorrow for my best friend Lenny, 'cos the Red Cross is sending him to a shelter in New Hampshire.

South, TX

That is a pretty picture, sweet violet. Which one is it?

Danville, VA(Zone 7a)

Shoot we had the power and the stupid weather to go with it... We were in the high 60's for 3 days then the 40's for the last two..... Someone told me on Wed we are suppose to be in the low 70's !!!!! This sucks. Get cold and stay that way ... We are all getting sick from this weather.... Just my two cents....
Susan

Williston, ND

we are 17 below or better,id love to have your cold weather

Danville, VA(Zone 7a)

No you would not because it can't ever make up its mind.... Then wam we get hit with an ice storm... Then that is trouble here...LOL We learned early what it meant to own a GOOD chain saw.... we live on a gravel tree lined road...LOL First year the famer had to come plow dig us out..... LOL

Sally - that is Ness' Satin Rose.

As for cold winter weather, I'd rather be in Denver. I was snowed in once for 3 days . . . wouldn't be so bad now, since I've got a computer!

South, TX

Well, I like to visit snow, but not have it. I want to garden all year. Seems like the power goes off a lot for the areas in snowy areas, but maybe that is just what makes the news.

Danville, VA(Zone 7a)

We lose power if the ice gets to bad... but we have a wood stove that can heat the whole house so no problems really... I miss the snow and once in awhile it does snow a little....
Sue

Jasper, AR(Zone 7a)

We are expecting ice here tomorrow :( I am set if I can't get out for a week. Hopefully we wont lose power--but we heat with wood and cook with propane so other than the light stands being dark things SHOULD be OK..DH even bought me an inverter for the truck-- so I can charge my cell phone--could even let the truck idle & watch a little tv if my parking brake worked and I didn't live on a mountain ;)

Danville, VA(Zone 7a)

My plants would have to do with sun light but heat they would have... sometimes to much...LOL

Today was high 50's-absolutley warm! I planted all my bulbs that i should have planted in september. Crocus, alliums, garlic. Did lots of weeding & mulching until my back started to hurt. I have been using old hay for mulch & it breaks down into lush topsoil.
Have intil the weekend to fugure out a watering system that will work for hubby. Guess I'd better repot & wick everything. I am head off to the west coast to see grandchildren.
anybody live in portland Or?

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I'm behind on wrapping gifts, and I need to finish a bunch of them today so I can get them to UPS.

I finally polished up the article on propagating AVs by leaf and submitted it... it was published today.

http://davesgarden.com/guides/articles/view/1996/

This one took me a while to edit... I kept wanting to include every possible trick and variation to be "helpful," but that ended up making the process sound far too complicated. Hopefully I covered the basics well enough to get some new folks propagating. I know there are plenty of good propagation pages out there, but it still seemed like a good topic to add to the DG article database. :-)

Land of OZ, CT(Zone 6a)

I read your article this morning--enjoyed it very much! It was very well organized, concise, but covered most aspects of propagation of AV's, w/o becoming too overwhelming for the beginner. Great job--Wtg!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Thanks, Phoebe! I'm glad you think I accomplished what I'd hoped to do with it. :-)

Maybe we'll see more newcomers in this forum in a couple of months, showing off their "ear" pots!

Land of OZ, CT(Zone 6a)

Hope so--got a few "ears" coming myself--so cute ^_^

Dover AFB, DE(Zone 7a)

Great article! Thanks.

Frederick, MD(Zone 7a)

Well done article, Critter. Thanks for the time and effort it took.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I appreciate your compliments... it's good to know there have been some expert eyes on it. :-)

Please feel free to post additional suggestions or tips at the bottom of the article. Thanks!

Danville, VA(Zone 7a)

Critter,
You wrote a wonderful sticky there.... It is always helpful when someone takes the time to do like you did.... Oh this is Susan51 typing...LOL Name change not me.. ^_^
My puter is down and I hate this one but hey I can still get on... My plug should be here soon for my laptop... I hope anyway....
Thanks again..
Hugs,
Susan

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I like the new name, Susan! If I seem to lose track of "who" you are -- just kick me under the table. I'll catch on. LOL

Danville, VA(Zone 7a)

Critter,
Me kick you... NEVER You were one of the first people I met on daves and YOU have always been one of the nicest people I have had the joy to meet in person....
Hugs,
Susan
I love turtles and have 5 Chihuahua's so be my name...

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

:-) I knew you had Chihuahuas... but I don't think I knew they numbered 5! That's a "herd!" I can just imagine them swarming you... LOL

Danville, VA(Zone 7a)

Well they are my kids now and we also have one large dog also and all 5 of them don't make her...LOL Dolly is a Dalmation spelling is wrong sorry but no spell check on hubby's puter.... I put my Darla to sleep after she killed my 4 outside cats... If I had done that when she got the first one I would still have 3 old cats left.... Nothing to do with the breed just almost always once they start that they don't stop and I did not want her thinking the little ones were next... I also took her to a trainer to help but she was heck bent on this so I did what I had to do... More info that you more then likely wanted sorry...
Hugs,
Susan

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I'm sorry about Darla... I know that was a hard decision. I need to talk Jim into swinging over your way some time when we are going to Winston-Salem. I wonder how young Eliot-kitty would get along with your Chi herd? Maybe we should make a play date for them, LOL. My cousin's dog found him under a bush and rescued him, so I think he has a fondness for dogs... although he has never met any that small!

Jasper, AR(Zone 7a)

Hey T-C I have 7 Chihuahua's not a herd-- but a pack;) all but 1 is black and tan-- so they are the "Black pack". Definately fearsome-- and fearless which out in the back woods is NOT a good thing. Their favorite thing is to go town on laundry day and ride in the laundry basket. They are all the deer type-- so looks like a basket full of meer cats.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

OH, Gran... I know it's not the pet forum, LOL, but we really *need* to see a photo of the pack in the basket next laundry day!

Land of OZ, CT(Zone 6a)

Basket full of meer cats--LOLOL!

Danville, VA(Zone 7a)

It was a very hard thing to do but it had to be done.. She was raised with these cats they cleaned her as a puppy ... So whats done is done...
I was going to post pictures of my chi's but forgot this is not my puter... grrrrrrrrrrr
Hugs,
Susan
PS. Anytime you are welcome here Critter... Hey house may be a mess but you are always welcome. Or I can drive to where you are also..

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

You're welcome here any time also! 10 minutes warning, and I can have hot coffee ready. :-) Keep that in mind if you ever head northward! We will have to find a way to meet in the middle as you suggested if we don't manage to get to the same swap this spring.

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

Great article, critter. I'm learning a lot on this forum. One of these days, I'll have some pictures to post.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I've learned a lot here, too! Looking forward to your pictures... :-)
