??? re: Burning DVD/CD to watch on TV

My church has 2 players - one is for DVDs, the other has a VCR and a DVD/CD player.
I have some videos (wmv format) that I would like to play on the TV for the kids.
Some were D/L from You Tube and a couple were some I made with my digital camera.
I was able to burn them to a CD.
The DVD player won't play them - OK, I understand that.
The DVD/CD play displayed a message that said something about the disk not having Playback ability.
I think maybe the format is incorrect. (basically, I'm clueless) They play OK on my PC.
What format would the videos have to be in order to play them on the TV?
Is there software that would do what I want to do? And - if so, any recommendations?
