Please help! My mother has a beautiful noid angel wing begonia. It's about 4 feet tall. She just moved it indoor and it's dropping almost ALL of it's leaves. I don't remembered it doing that last year. Is this normal?
I, myself, have a much smaller pot of this begonia and it's not dropping leaves in my sunroom.
Oh, would you know what cultivar this angelwing is?
Help! My mother's noid angelwings begonias dropping leaves
It looks a lot like 'Lucerna'. A lot of begonias drop their leaves when you move them to another environment and this is normal behavior. Just watch the watering - not saturated but not bone dry either. Once it acclimates it should start throwing out new leaves. Cut off old, yellow leaves and any that show hints of mildew.
OK. Thanks for that info. I will let her know. I just hate to see it die. I saw it earlier this week and there are hardly any leaves left on there.
This cane ('Lucerna') is usually not a problem but does drop leaves and may get some mildew. Other canes are notorious for mildew (Pink Minx, Maurice Amey, Don Miller, Lois Burks, etc.) and lots of leaf drop (Medora). Lots of bright light and warm conditions helps a lot getting these begonias through winter.
Is that your Lucerna? Very pretty. Your spots are much bigger than mine. I took my small plants out of sunroom last night and checked for mildew - just in case. I didn't have any. I'll have to tell my mom to check for that. I just hope my mother's plant will recover.
No, that is 'Flamingo Queen'. My 'Lucerna' is nothing to look at now since I have neglected it for the last several years. I started a new pot of it this year so hopefully it will regain its past stature. I have had 'Lucerna' over 30 years and was my first cane begonia (pass along plant). It took me over 25 years to find its real name - the only other name I had for it was "Angel Wing Begonia". A lot of people misspell the "Angel" and call it "Angle" which makes a huge difference in the meaning.
Here are some of my "Spotted" or "Polka Dot" canes.
WOW! They are beautiful! I especially like the look of the one in the middle in front, oblong leaves with lots of spots.
Do the spots get more or less distinctive with the growing condition?
It depends. I think with spots, age and light exposure helps increase spots.
With streaks I think less light intensifies streaking but then you don't get blooms. Here is Silvermist in deep shade this year.
P.S. The dark green leaves are 'Irene Nuss' and the less streaked leaves are 'Sophie Cecile' and they all reside in the same giant pot.

It's too bad you don't get blooms with the Silvermist in the deep shade. I think I like the look of the leaves better (the one in the shade).
Me too but that is the way it goes.
