I have an AV in a napkin holder that looks like a ceramic chicken. Right now its in its original container that it came home in but is needing repotted. I want to drill a hole in the chicken and do that wick method of watering. My question is does the water container have to be under the chicken? Or can I put it sort of down but to one side? I want to put the chicken in a basket with straw and conceal the watering container.

Hi, you would have to make sure the soil doesn't sit in the water and that the plant is above the water. If the plant sits to low it will get to much water.
If you used a closed deli type container with a lid you could sit the chicken on top of in the basket
If you love that chicken, well, drilling holes is always just a little risky... I'd suggest using the chicken as a cache pot (as you've been doing) and bottom watering it. You could put a piece of poly fleece or something under the AV pot... it would hold a little extra water and provide it to the plant via capillary action through the hole in the bottom of the plastic pot... that's similar to wick watering in providing moisture over a longer period.
You could also put gravel, perlite or something like that in the bottom of the chicken and set the pot on it...How much space do you have between the bottom of the pot and the container? I have used the blanket/polar fleece in ceramic containers where there is not much extra space..I put a wicking yarn in my pot just to make extra contact with the material I put in the bottom of containers be it blanket or gravel or perlite.
